I visited this facility recently, to enroll my child. First off the facility is old, so there's lots of work needed to the building including the exposed wiring. The general population area is cluttered and dirty (especially from the play area I'll get to that)!!! The office in the rear is a fire hazard, as there's material, clothing and papers cluttering the place up. The Outside play area is no better, it's pretty much a large dirt area with little grass. There's a mulberry tree that was not cleaned up after ( i can just see the stains and ruined clothes now). I had to schedule an appointment to come in and see the school, and it in itself was odd, as most day-care have an open visitation policy. It almost felt as if everyone was putting on a slight of hand show. What was really odd is how they do not allow you to talk to the children, unless they talk to you first. After visiting, I'd advise anyone to go elsewhere. Not to mention their costs OUTRAGEOUS, hope you have a lot of money. Felt like a scam.

Response from Briar Rose Children's Center

AUTHOR: Briar Rose Children''s Center - (USA)

POSTED: Tuesday, September 22, 2009

Please Note: Both rip-off reports were initiated by the same parent.

This response is to the one he signed Corey (not his real name). Coreys comments are in italics.

I visited this facility recently, to enroll my child. First off the facility is old, so there's lots of work needed to the building including the exposed wiring. There is no exposed wiring. Im not sure what work the parent saw that needed done. The building is maintained and in excellent condition.

The general population area is cluttered and dirty (especially from the play area I'll get to that)!!! Our facility is cleaned daily. Clutter will collect in the cubby area and of course, when the children are playing, they will have many toys out and about in the room.

The office in the rear is a fire hazard, as there's material, clothing and papers cluttering the place up. The fire department inspects regularly and has never found any fire hazards. They do not legislate on unorganized administrative offices.

The Outside play area is no better, it's pretty much a large dirt area with little grass. There's a mulberry tree that was not cleaned up after ( i[sic] can just see the stains and ruined clothes now). The outside play area is 80' x 80'. It includes the following: 5 climbing trees, one 20 x 20 sandbox, a swing, a small hut made from logs sunk into to the ground. (Wild grapes grow over this structure to make a cozy playing and reading space), a hill used for sledding in the winter and for running and rolling down in the other seasons, a concrete patio and walkway, a vegetable garden, several flower gardens and all the tools necessary to keep it all up. We play outside every day. The mulberries stain the sidewalk during Mulberry season. We eat them, play with them and cook with them. The stains are not permanent.

I had to schedule an appointment to come in and see the school, and it in itself was odd, as most day-care have an open visitation policy. It almost felt as if everyone was putting on a slight [sic] of hand show. Once parents are enrolled, they are welcome to come at any time with no notice and stay as long as theyd like. It is standard practice in quality child care and preschool settings to pre-arrange first time visits. This keeps the visitors to a predictable (for the children) schedule and ensures that the mood of the classroom can be properly maintained.

What was really odd is how they do not allow you to talk to the children, unless they talk to you first. Even the teachers are quiet! We prefer the childrens voices and intentions to be foremost in the environment. When visitors come, we assume they are not trained in Waldorf Education and we prefer that they observe quietly so they can get an idea of what the day is like. Many visitors interact with the children in very appropriate ways. If you come to visit, we might include you in baking bread, making butter, or fixing toys! Or, you may just sit quietly and enjoy the active, peaceful atmosphere.

True most schools have a potential client schedule an appointment; however I have NEVER heard of a school telling the potential new client to not talk to a child enrolled at that school.

I have called other pre-schools and private daycares and this is one of the most expensive in my area.

I have also talked to some other daycares and child care providers and have heard many horror stories about this "school".

I post on this site, to let people know what I encountered and to forewarn people, that they may potentially be getting into a rip-off and to investigate other options first.

You visited this facility and did not like it. So you chose not to do business with them. No harm done. No money lost. No repurcussions. Why then are you crying rip off?

A COUPLE OF THINGS GOING ON HERE

i've never been to this school, but was a pre-school director for 12 years, so I do know alot about the management side.

First off, even though a school has an "open door " policy the management has to schedule appointments in order to be able to get all the work done, have field trips, etc.....If they did not then there would be no order at all, there would be people milling around all day long. That is very un-nerving to young children. In this day and age of perverts running around many day care centers have rules about not talking to the children. It is sad they have to do this, but they have to keep the children safe.

If this center is filthy call the health dept and or the CPS day care division. They regulate the pre-schools, health and safety areas.

Call around to the other pre-schools in the area and see what their prices are and that way you can see if they are out of line as far as prices. I also would have asked to see the qualifications of the teachers and of the Director as well. Many have state requirements they have to follow.

Sad to see that our children tend to come last these days. Hopefully you will find a good qualified pre-school . There are many if you keep looking!

Good luck,

Cat
