After installing a touch dimmer made by Bright Image Corp. onto a bedside lamp it began turning on spontaneously. Touching the table top or moving nearby would light the lamp. On one occasion the lamp was lit by starting a vacuum cleaner on the opposite side of the room.

Concerned about the strange goings-on we tested the lamp with a multi-test instrument. We found 120v of current present across the body of the solid brass lamp onto which the fixture was installed. We tested the outlet and the lamp without the fixture and found nothing unusual after its removal.

This is potentially a very dangerous situation. Perhaps others might see this and will be careful when using this type of fixture. If it acts strangely it should be removed immediately.

The dimmer is a retrofit type with a screw-in base. After screwing the fixture into the socket a thumb-screw is then tightened onto the outside of the socket to hold it in place.

The fixture label gives the model number S-1, Lampholder fitting number E96955, UL mark, list no. 94M3 followed by www.touchnglow.com. Also listed is wattage and voltage information. The last list item states "Made in China for Bright Image Corporation".

The web address, www.touchnglow.com, is a storefront operation. There is no physical address or contact information available on the site.

Additional Instruction for Touch Control Installation

AUTHOR: Tom - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Tuesday, July 03, 2007

One key instruction that is not included for the installation of the Replacement Touch Control is the fact that it will not work if the lamp has a ground wire. I found this out thru 3 hours on trying to get the control to work on a wall sconce which has the small braded ground wire which I naturally hooked up to the house wire ground. This should not be a problem with regular table lamps as they have no ground wire to begin with but other types of fixtures typically have the braded ground wire.

This product is NOT a danger

AUTHOR: Greg - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Tuesday, August 08, 2006

I am an electrical engineer. I agree that you did measure 120 VOLTS with your high impedance meter. Please note that 120V is OK as long as the current is limited to levels that are accepted by UL. Please note that this product IS UL approved. Internal to this unit is 2, high impedance resistors connected in series. 1 side connects to 120V the other side connects to the touch post. 2 resistors are required per UL in case 1 resistor fails. These resistors limit the current through a human body to very low acceptable levels.
