I rented car put luggage in trunk moved it to rental office. Agent rented the car with my luggage to someone else who drove away with my personal items, and Budget agant and manager REFUSED to contact that person to retreive my baggage. At same time I was having angina and needed my medicine that was in the car, and I had to call police.
On Tuesday November 29th 2005, I rented a car at Budget, at Palm Beach International. As a direct result of the arrogance of your employees, I had one of the most stressful experiences of my life. I'm 64, have a serious cardiac and asthmatic condition, and almost ended up in the hospital. I had to call the police for assistance as well as have my daughter drive over an hour to come up to asist me during this ordeal.
The two women at the counter both had heavy Caribbean accents, and were difficult to understand. However after signing the rental agreement, I was told that I had a red car parked in front in space #54 I went to the red car and the key was in the door, as I was told it would be. My suitcase that I placed on the back seat, held my medications along with my clothing and personal items. I placed it on the back seat, started the car, then realized I was missing a small case that held my Blackberry, iPod, flight tickets and other important papers. Thinking I might have left it on the counter, I moved the car in front of Budget building, walked back in and asked the two ladies if they found a black leather case, they both ignored me! They didn't even look up. I asked again. Was I invisible? Finally I stepped in front of one who happened to be the supervisor (Ms. Lundy Sanituil) and again asked if she saw my case. She looked at me and sarcastically said I don't see it! I then thought I may have left it in the plane and asked her to please call Delta for me. She answered NO! I asked again and she repeated No!. Then I politely asked her to please give me the phone number for Delta, and she said she didn't have it. Worried about my case, I went outside and asked the shuttle driver if he found it. He said no, suggesting I return to the terminal with him. He told me to lock the car before getting in the shuttle. I moved my suitcase to the trunk, locked the doors and returned to the terminal. I was able to locate the case and got back into the next shuttle. When I returned to my shock the car was gone! I asked where my car was, and again was ignored. I finally became extremely agitated, not just because of her rudeness, but I knew that if I didn't have the medications that were in my luggage, I would have to go to a hospital. I also was feeling extremely anxious and worried about my cardiac condition.
Out of frustration, I called 911 to report the theft of the car and my personal belongings. When the police arrived, and I explained my situation, the officer went to Ms. Sanituil and asked her what happened she was very rude to him (see the police report) and she refused to even tell him her name. After several minutes of this banter, he threatened to arrest her, and she said Go ahead I know my rights, I have a masters in law and I was a police officer myself. He asked where she was a police, and she refused to answer. At that point he called for assistance and a female officer arrived. The Deputy Sheriff saw that I was having breathing problems and chest discomfort and insisted on calling an ambulance - I refused now wanting to be taken to a strange hospital when I hoped that my medications would soon be retreived by police.
My daughter arrived to care for me, as I was having breathing problmes and chest pain. We both went outside and sat on a bench. The sheriff's deputy stayed with us until several hours later, when the police from another city, located the person who had the vehicle and retrieved and delivered my luggage to another officer who brought it to us.
When I was given the suitcase the officer, we saw that it had been opened and even my medication case had been tampered with. My portable GPS, my winter jacket a hat were taken.
Although I am not aware whether any medications were missing, I was happy to have them back. I cancelled the rental contract and my daughter took me to her home.
I contacted the company president and informed him of how hisr employees treated not only me, but the two police officers, and that they rented the car with my luggage inside, knowing that I had a contract and the keys.
I submitted a description of the stolen items with receipts, and the Palm Beach Sheriff Police Report # 05-137394
Although they (reluctantly) reembursed me for the stolen items, I demanded an apology as well as compensation for the stress that was caused by their agents belligerents that caused my health problems. I had previously had 2 heart attacks as well as several heart operations.
They sent me $200 and had their lawyer send me a threatening letter.
