Canines for Change is really Great Lakes Assistance Dogs (G.L.A.D.), just a change in names. While reinventing themselves it would be nice to think they have changed but any potential clients should be very careful about this company.  Please look at Ripoff Report for Great Lakes Assistance Dogs.  It is the same person, same address and very similar in many respects. The new Canines for Change web page write up has fewer misrepresentations than G.L.A.D. did, an improvement.  The current major errors (misrepresentations?) in Canines for Change and the companion Facebook Page Canines 4 Change are:

1) Claim to be a charity under Michigan State Laws.  Canines for Change is not listed in a search of the Michigan Attorney General Office online records. Great Lakes Assistance Dogs is listed.

2) Owners biographical data is only slightly exaggerated, an improvement from the original G.L.A.D. pages.

3) Becuse most of their dogs are free to them with puppies raisers and trainers usually being unpaid volunteers, it impiles most of the money raised is for "overhead."  This is not unusual for many charties but that does not make it right.

Be careful dealing with this company.

Canines for Change Restructured

AUTHOR: Dr. Nikki Kersey, Executive Director - ()

POSTED: Thursday, February 19, 2015

I encourage anyone who cares enough about the truth to contact me on my personal email and cell phone:

(((Redacted)))

(((Redacted)))

All poeple know that anyone can put anything on the internet and people will assume it's true. No one has anything to hide and we will always answer everything truthfully and we always conduxt ourselves with integrity.  I am happy to answerr the questions brought up by the anonymous "insider" above though I am very curious as to why a poster who is trying to ruin buiness and stand in the way of families getting access to a needed resource would not use thier real name as our satisifed clients have on this forum and others.

1. YES glad is still listed as a non profit on the state page as well as the federal page as we received our federal IRS status in August of 2014 and the federal government backdated it to 2008!!

2.  Canines for change DOES involve some of the same people and offers some of the same services as Glad did (and has the same mission), BUT we have restructured, acquired new trainers and are opeing new programs.  We have new affiliates and new policies and procudures as well as a new organizational structure.

3. We have applied to the federal and state government for a name change and filed the appropriate paperwok which can be shown to anyone who would like to see by contacting with your real name and contact informaiton to the above email or phone number. Once the name change is confirmed, we will be posting about it on the sites.

4. We have had a very small percentage of disgruntled clients in the nearly 10 years we have been training and placing service dogs. Every organization in any business including the service dog business has disgruntled clients.  Unfortunately, just like in any setting, you cant make 100 % of your clients happy.  We have had to make some tough choices about turning clients down that were not approrpaite for our program at various levels of the program.  This usually leads to hard feelings on behalf of the client but we are ALWAYS going to make the correct decision to protect our dogs and staff.

5.  Everyone agrees with "insider" that families should be careful of this and ALL organizations when hiring and should do your research with credible people who know the real information and are not afriad to show evidence and give thier personal informaiton, like thier real name.

6. Every organization grows and makes exciting changes and we are doing just that!

Interestingly, it seems to me that the person who continues to follow GLAD has a personal vendetta against me and not against GLAD at all.  They are always taking about GLAD as the "same person".  Glad is run by a board of 7 people, not the executive director.  We have 7 trainers and various volunteers so GLAD is MANY people.  Additionally, NONE of the dogs we have had have been free or dontated so Im not sure why the "insider" would lie about that.  Maybe the "insider" isnt really and insuder with all the correct information becuase all those involved with glad mentioned above know exactly how much was paid for each of the dogs and where they came from.

Finally, every non profit has to file its 990 online for public display.  We are happy to send a copy of that to whoever inquires via phone call and wants to give thier name and address to send it to.  Our finacials are heavily scrutinized as are ALL non profits so it is not possible for ANY funds to be misappropriated, especially with our accountant.  Our trainers ARE paid, though not anywhere near what they should be for the time they spend training these dogs.

Canines for Change welcomes all inquires and has an open book and open door policy! Please contact us!
