Attention Business Owners: Capital One's SPARK Classic credit card product does not build business credit. After using the business card for 2 years and many complaints to customer service, a Capital One supervisor finally admitted that Capital One only reports credit history to the bureaus under the primary card holder's personal SS#. Capital One does not report credit history for SPARK business card to the business bureaus or Dunn & Bradstreet under the business name and business tax ID.

Capital One used deceptive and false advertising from at least 2013 to as recently as July 5, 2015 stating on its website that the SPARK Classic business card will provide the "opportunity to build business credit with no annual fee"  and "...the opportunity to build and strengthen credit for your business.." Our company based our decision to apply for a SPARK business card. At the time of application we provided our business name and business tax ID. We were assured that the personal data was requested only as part of the credit decision process and that credit would be reported under the business identy. Lie!

Almost immediately we noticed the account show up on my personal credit. Upon calling Capital One, I was again assured that credit was being reported to the business bureaus as well as on the primary cardholders personal credit. After many calls and over a year, I became more concerned as representative had a hard time even finding our business tax ID on the account. I was then advised that the primary focus for the this SPARK product was the small business owner who does not have a separate tax ID for the business but uses his/her SS#. That is not a business credit card that is a personal credit card that includes the business name on the face of the card.

Experian Business Bureau & SBA both counsel business owners to obtain a separate tax ID for a business in order to establish credit history for the business entity separate from one's personal credit. This Capital One SPARK product ignores the business tax ID yet advertises that one can build credit for the business. Our company just wasted 2 years using this SPARK product only to find out that we now must find another company and start over. We have also lost the opportunity to expand our tradelines due to the good payment history not being reported.

We have also reported this deception to the government financial protection agencies. If you are a SPARK credit card (at least classic) and have a separate tax ID for your business please be aware that you are NOT building business credit. You can call Capital One to confirm this and please take the time to file complaint with the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau on line.

We are insisting that Capital One advertised this a business product and must deliver on its statements. This means reporting past, current & future credit and payment history to the business credit bureaus under the tax ID of the business.
