In 1998 I recieved an application for a credit card with a 5.4 interest rate for the first year not to exceed 13.95. I recieved a credit card with only a $200.00 credit limit in the three months I had the card I only charged $200. made my payments on time.
In the third month I noticed the APR rate was 36.95 % I called them to dispute this and they lied to me and said they never sent out the application offering that 5.4 rate so I wrote a written request for a copy of my original application front and back , and also request that they close that account.
I consulted an attorney told him all about it and he said send them the final payment and on the back of the check write this "If cashed or indorsed this is the final payment of the disputed argument." So I sent them a check for the last $100 and did as my attorney said.
Then after that for the next two yrs they kept sending me bills with ridiculous charges on it for service charges and interest charges on a closed account I argued with them for yrs. Then I saw on my credit report that they had wrote that I had that I had a $200 limit. Most owed $213, most paid $213 0 balance but owed them $1,442.00 in interest charges and wrote on the report charged off as a bad dept.
I wrote Transunion sent an investigation form to them. They sent me another copy of my credit report saying this is what the investigation results were and under the capitol one deal it says now that I have a balance of $1,442.00.
This has been going on since 1998 and I've been trying to get this off my credit report the whole time but, no one will help me. I sent copies of the front and back of the original check of the final payment to capitol one and all the major credit bureas and still get no results.
I finally got capitol one's phone number called them again and tried very nicely to explain all this and they told me to just keep my check and that they weren't even gonna do anything about this but that they wanted me to pay them $1,442.00. and hung up on me.
I cannot believe that they are geting away with this. I remember several years ago 20/20 had a special on tv about capitol one being the biggest scam credit card company in the world. I wasn't one bit surprized about that.
At this point I don't know what to do except file a lawsuit angainst them which will cost me no telling how much money. this has ruined my credit and not to mention the mental stress this has put me through. And the worst part is that no one cares enough to do a thing about it not even the credit bureas.
Where is the consumer protection? This is the biggest fraudulent scam I have ever encountered in my life. I'm a single mom and cannot get any credit because of them. I plan to right the better business bureau but don't expect much. This is so unfair and unjust. I need someone to care. sincerely yours Kelly Green

STOP! ..before you think about using the Better Business Bureau (BBB)... CLICK HERE to see how other consumers were victimized by the BBB's false or misleading information. Don't be fooled! It has been reported, when there are thousands of complaints and other investigations underway by authorities, the BBB has no choice but to finally give an UNsatisfactory rating to a BBB member business that is paying the BBB big membership fees every year. When a business is reported that is NOT a BBB member, BBB files WILL more likely show an UNsatisfactory rating, then reportedly shake down that company to become a member of the BBB. One positive thing about the BBB is, either way, if a business has an unsatisfactory rating with the BBB, you can be sure, the business is bad. But what about all those BBB member businesses that had complaints filed against them? Consumers never get to hear about them. What about the BBB advertising to the public? Is this a false and misleading perception they are giving about consumer confidence when dealing with a business? Click here to understand more of what consumers and business alike are saying about the BBB. You decide. ..Remember. The BBB membership is not earned, it's paid for!
