I bought a home 3 years ago, a new home in an upscale neighborhood. I was very happy when I found out that the heating and cooling unit was not some off brand but a Carrier. I thought that I was getting top of the line equipment, boy was I ever wrong. Shortly after we moved in the cooling coil in the AC unit went out. I called the installers and they came out and took care of it no questions. The unit was less than a year old. This week the compressor failed, I called the company that did the work originally and found out my worst fears were true, it was the compressor. I was then told that it would be $895.00 to replace the compressor, on a 5 year warranty. Believe me I do understand that they only cover parts, and was prepared to pay the labor. But when the compressor blew it caused the plug to burn up, the freon to turn acidic, the start capacator to weaken and now because the system has been open they have to put a dryer on both the lines. I wouold expect that these are parts wouldn't you?

I called Carrier, and what a surprise I got. The person on the phone could not have been anymore uncaring and unfeeling. In a monotone voice she said, we only cover the compressor, logic did not mean anything to this person. I told her that I was not happy with her answers, and that I would like to speak to her manager, she said you will have to put it in writing and send it in to be reviewed. She would not allow me the courtesy of having her manager speak to me. Then I said about the junk that they were selling, her comment was, well sir you have had it 3 years. I explained that my last AC unit was a RUUD and was 15 years old when it died. Bottom line is this folks, the person that is putting the compressor said this is a common problem with Carrier's condensing units, he quit selling them. The person that the installer sent out said the same thing, that their compressors are junk, and they have this problem. If you are approched by someone to sell you a carrier, run, as fast as you can the other way. If I buy another house, I will not buy it if their is a carrier unit sitting next to it, pure absolute garbage, and they will not stand behind it.

#1 Consumer Suggestion

Carrier Honered Their Warranty

AUTHOR: Rob - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Thursday, July 05, 2007

To whom it may concern,

In my opinion, as a seasoned veteran in the HVAC service industry, this rip off report as written shows a lack of consumer knowledge. One of the problems (and the actual injustice) is that the contractor that installed/service the customer did not inform the customer of all of the facts and/or reasons for the failure of the equipment.

Points to ponder:
1. In the US we do not have off brands. All of the major a/c manufacturers market under different names, they all buy major components from major vendors and some of the parts are manufactured in house.

2. All of the major manufacturers have problems with their units. As a service technician I have seen as many broken "Ruud" units as I have seen broken "carrier" units.

3. All of the major manufacturers have very simular warranty policies as do the contractors who install them. Basically the Contractor warranty is 1 year parts and labor and the manufacture is an additional amount of years on the compressor and/or other parts.

4. The cooling coil that went out, this happens and fortunatly it happened within the first year.

5. The compressor failure could be due to any number of reasons: Lack of maintenance, misuse, power problems, loose connections, poor installation practices, low refrigerant charge, dirty filters, short cycling and too many more to list.

6. Carrier honered their written warranty, which you should have received in your homeowner package. They gave you a new compressor at no charge. They are not admitting that it was their fault, nor did they question why the compressor failed... they simply did what they promised they would do.

7. They did not pay for your 2 new filter driers because the majority of compressor failures are due to other factors and not manufactures defects, but again they didn't argue, they did what they were supposed to do.

8. The non caring Carrier rep was probably more caring than you think. People in that posisition must guard their fellings so they don't have mental problems. They receive 20 to 40 some calls per day with people in "upscale" neighborhoods with complaint after complaint and they can't just give away the farm... there is a limit as to how much you can just give away before there is nothing left.

Please don't blame "Carrier" for ripping you off and don't praise "Ruud" for the perfect unit as I have seen 30 year old systems (and older) made by all of the manufactures as well as the ocasional "DOA".

Good luck in your quests.

Bob
