I have to say please do not be fooled by a pretty building. Yes, its great for the cats and really it should be just about cat rescue.
There is a tone that does not feel right there. It used to be so comfortable there. I liked when they were smaller, they helped the community. I hear now they do not help as many people as they used too. Their fees went up, I can understand but it looks bad as they need to pay for that huge facility. I mean look at that building, why would anyone think they need money? Who is funding all of this you have to wonder right?

I know many volunteers left and were not happy. changes were made that left them out of the loop. They need to feel important. They also know a lot of the truths and can speak volumes in a positive or negative way. Smoozing them with fake faces is just something to laugh at.

The new director has got to be the most fake person I have ever seen. She has this fake smile that anyone who can really see through someone will see through her. I have  heard many complaints about her. That she does not listen to anyone she talks over them, she is impatient and rude, says mean things too.I guess she is doing some good for Cat Depot as she is a marketer so i hear but not a good manager. Her job apparently is to help raise money, good for the cats! That is a plus.

Anyhow, Cat Depot is beautiful, please help them and adopt just be aware of the fake people in there. We all know the cats are not fake :)

This is all just my opinion of what i saw and heard. Everyone must form their own of course.

Sorry I am using  else's computer today, mine is down. I work a lot from home. Sometimes I don't like being around the cats all day. Sorry for any confusion.

From: Shelley Thayer - Executive Director

AUTHOR: John Freisen - (United States of America)

POSTED: Thursday, April 07, 2011

I am Shelley Thayer, Executive Director of Cat Depot of Sarasota, Florida. Google Cat Depot and you will see my name in capitals right after Cat Depot name. I am very proud of my position. I have a very high paid job (almost $72,000 in 2010) and I deserve it.
I do give the cats "tough love" because after  all,  they are only animals. I cannot keep unruly or disobedient cats in my shelter, as they do not sell well. We are not in business to harbor un-adoptable cats, we are a business and there is no room for bleeding hearts when running a business. We are here to make money so I can keep my well-deserved salary and we can continue to make Cat Depot the gorgeous facility it needs to be. Who wants to walk into a run down shelter? The people that complain about me are simply jealous: of my Executive position, of my looks, of the magic I have with cats.
And yes, if the cats can't conform to what I want, they are gone, and it is nobody's business where they go. When you relinquish a cat to Cat Depot, you do just that - relinquish it. For those who are uneducated, relinquish means to GIVE UP. So sometimes we have to give up on these cats and if they get driven out to vacant land far away. Too bad. Their shortened lives will be happier than living inside my shelter all there lives. Cats are meant to fend for themselves and run from predators. We save the highly adoptable ones, preferably purebred. And if some people don't like that well  then go to Animal Services where they can find anything they want. Animal Services has to take in anything I don't ake in "anything", that is why Cat Depot has such a fine reputation.

Amazing, yes...but not in a good way

AUTHOR: Stephen - (United States of America)

POSTED: Sunday, July 18, 2010

I never visited the original building of Cat depot, but upon entering the new facility the first thing I noticed was the small kittens that looked underfed and scared. When an employee brought out some canned food to them, they were ravenous and finished the food off in minutes, looking for more. I said nothing, assuming more food was to come. It didn't. These were small, growing kittens that were hungry...I asked where the director Shelley Thayer was, whose name I see splashed all over the website with plenty of photos of her, and was told she was just leaving - she was pointed out driving away in her Lexus SUV.

The next thing I noticed was the incredibly small number of cats for the space. When I inquired about that I got no real answer. It made me sad that at Sarasota Animal Services, where I went next and adopted a well -fed kitten, is overflowing with animals, while Cat Depot looks comparatively empty. Yes, maybe they get awards and maybe they have a state of the art building, but my money and time will go to a shelter that is really a shelter, and not a show place for a few chosen cats. Yet even those chosen cats are not so lucky, if they happen to be a kitten that is always hungry. Maybe Cat Depot should spend a few bucks on kitten food instead of office space, a huge kitchen and oh yes, more office space they are now adding. "Small staff" Ms. Thayer mentions...well there is enough square footage there for a huge staff, plus some. Too bad that new addition won't be used to house more homeless cats..no, it will have a shower and another kitchen, and more meeting rooms ..wish the poor kittens could have access to those kitchens and get fed.

Cat Depot is an Amazing Facility

AUTHOR: shelleyt@catdepot.org - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Saturday, July 10, 2010

My name is Shelley Thayer. I am the Executive Director at Cat Depot, an amazing nonprofit, no-kill rescue, adoption, education and resource center in Sarasota, FL. I invite everyone to visit our new "free roaming" facility at 2542 17th Street, Sarasota, FL. And, yes, it is true that we are adding a room to our building. It is an education center for community outreach programs for children and adults to teach education and kindness to animals. Which we hope in turn, will promote kindness to each other.

How is this possible? The facility along with the education center was built as the result of the enormous compassion and generosity of a local couple who wanted to save lives.

Since my arrival a year ago, we have moved into this wonderful state-of-the-art facility. Our volunter base has grown from 250 volunteers to over 900 volunteers. We have doubled our adoption efforts to save lives, and in 2010 our goal is to place 1,000 once homeless cats into loving homes.

We have reached out to Sarasota and Manatee Counties and are currently working with numberous local and national organizations as well as individuals. We participated with the ASPCA, Maddie's Foundation, HSUS and American Humane to help rescue cats from locations that are now under investigation for cruelty to animals. We have helped people from New York, Pennsylvania, Texas and numerous areas throughout Florida, including individual rescue workers in our area. People have asked why we would help anyone outside our county when so many animals in our backyard are in need. Our answer? There are felines everywhere who need help. The majority of our efforts are concentrated in two counties. Approximately 50% of our cats come out of Sarasota County and return to Sarasota County and 40% come from and go back to Manatee County. The other 10% come from areas outside of these two counties and from situations where the cats may be euthanized without our help.

No county in the U.S. is protected from the discovery of hoarders, or small private sanctuaries or large rescue groups that started with wonderful intentions but found themselves over their heads. The devastation for the animals if often and unfortunately, a slow cruel dealth. If some day such a discovery is made in our county, I hope that other organizations will help us.

I often tell our small hard working staff that "it's not about the building," it's what we do with the building that makes a difference in so many lives - the public's, our volunteer's, and our grateful cats and kittens, whose fear has dissipated and hungry stomachs have been fed.

It is true that I have a marketing background which I am grateful for when it comes to raising needed funds to rescue and care for inujured and suffering animals.  Cat Depot relies on private donations and memberships to keep this magnificent facility operating month after month. I appreciate every dedicated volunteeer, every donation, every membership, and every person who gets up early or goes to bed late to make a difference in the life of these deserving felines.

Do I keep smiling? You bed I do. Because I'd like to believe that there is hope and that together, we can make a positive difference for animals in need.

That's why I do what I do every day. I believe in our staff and in our volunteers and all those people we have helped, or wish we could have helped if we had more funding or room. Most of all, I believe in Cat Depot and know that we are blessed to have this caring organization.

Again, I invite everyone to come "see for themselves." If you have any questions, you can call me at (941) 366.2404 or email me at Shelleyt@catdepot.org. Thank you for helping the animals.

Directors name

AUTHOR: Horizen - (USA)

POSTED: Thursday, July 08, 2010

I thought I should mention the directors name is Shelley Thayer. Don't be fooled by her. She is all about publicity not about helping the community anymore. Oh.. I hear they are building and extension upstairs.. again, where is the money coming from in this bad economy? it seems strange that donations are running this place.

There are other rescue organizations around that really need money right down to begging for cans of food for their dogs. Help the animals that really need it. Check around your community and see for yourself.

It makes you wonder..
