My husbands cell phone quit working and we took it to Martins Supermarket in Nappanee, IN. The girl at the Centennial booth looked at it and said it couldn't be fixed. She said it wasn't a very good phone and they don't sell that kind anymore.
I asked her what we could do to get a replacement. She looked up our contract and said that there was nothing she could do about it. Our contract wasn't up until April, 2005 so if we wanted a new phone it would cost us over $200.00 - a new activation charge and we would have to sign a new 2 year contract.
I contacted the home office to see if they could do anything and they just blew me off with a bunch of corporate babble.
Now we have to pay 60.00 a month until April for a phone we can't use or buy into a new contract with them - like we would ever do business with them again! If we cancel our contract they charge $250 plus you have to pay for the remaining months.
This is definitly a rip off!!

#6 UPDATE EX-employee responds
Non working phone

Here is yet another fine example of a very uniformed buyer. Someone who just buys because the price is right or on a whim. When you sign a contract, it is important to read that contract and also with wireless to ask some other very important questions.......like will I have converage in the area I live or what sort of warranty comes with my phone.....how long does it last...... These are questions that 9 out of 10 times people do not bother asking.... They just sign up for service with a contract because the phone looks cool and it is cehap or free. I know because I have been working in the wireless business for three years and I have seen it time and time again. I have had instances where I have even pointed out the limitations with the warranty that comes with a phone, offered the additional insurance that covers the phone for any reason for as long as you have the phone and was told no to not add it. Only when the phone is dropped in the lake three months later do they insist that they were not told about it or requested to have it. I am not saying that you are that person. I am saying that when you sign a contract, you should be asking these important questions. Not just with Centennial, but with any provider. Different companies offer different coverage and you are almost always better off takeing the insurance for instances sucj as the one you are in. As a consumer, you may not be aware of this, but in wireless you have company owned stores, and indirect agent stores. The difference is the company owned stores are almost a full service store minus a tech on site. The agent stores are the ones located inside other businesses or their own store often selling more than just one company. These stores only purpose is to sell phones. They are not there to do much of anything else, resulting in the experience you ran into at the store. This is not just with Centennial, but with all carriers that have agent stores. There are some that actually charge you just to take a bill payment. You do have options. You can go any company owned store and request the phone be sent back to the manufacturer to be repaired if it is less than a year old. You can get a loaner phone FREE of charge. You could also purchase a phone with no extension of your contract for a decent price of around 50 dollars, if your phone is out of the manufacturers warranty or if you do not want to send yours back for repair. Your other option is to pay the breakage fee of 250 and cut your ties altogether. You do not have to pay every month for a phone that is not working. You do have options. I hope that you will read this and decide to spread what I have written in regards to purchasing wireless and company owned and agent stores to your friends and family, especially if they are in the process of signing a contract. So, you have options to solve your problem, but only you can decide what avenue to take. I sincerely hope that you resolve your issues and that you will take my advice the next time you purchase or get a free phone in the future.

I work for Centennial, and I have a suggestion. We sell refurbished phones at a price lower than 200.00. We have phones starting as low as 50.00 (assuming you are on a TDMA plan)(motorola 120t) this phone does not sign a new agreement and can be purchased at most RETAIL locations providing they have them in stock.(probably not the Martins store as it is more than likely an Agent) Just thought I might help.

Okay, when you signed the contract they should have told you if you purchase signal insurance your phone will be covered no matter what. Or if not, you will have to pay retail price of a new phone when still in contract. Retail is not the rebate price you paid when signing contract. They prob. get commisions off of the ins. so I am almost sure that asked you about it. Paying the 250.00 fee to get out of the contract is all you would have to pay. You should not have to finish paying out the contract. The 250.00 I think is to buy it out. So if you did it now you would save 50.00 and be able to switch to another company. If they were nice they would have atleast given you a loaner phone until april.
