Central Transport, what appears to be a good company to work for, is actually anything but...
I worked for the company for 2 years, I was a hi-lo driver. I worked hard, I was rarely late, and in two years I only called off twice. I worked hard and got my job done, that's usually something that employers look for in an employee. Not at Central.
They decided to change things there. They wanted all the employees to hold CDLs (truck driving licenses). People who couldn't qualify to get one, were laid off. The thing is, they didn't qualify certain people for stupid reasons. At first it was only people with criminal backgrounds who couldn't qualify. As time went by they began letting people go for reasons such as "you have a citation", "you have a speeding ticket", "you have diabetes", "you're not old enough".
People who worked for the company for 5, 10, even 15 years were laid off because of a speeding infraction 4 years ago.
It gets better though. I was one of the people they laid off, reason being was because I'm not old enough to obtain a CDL, I'll be 21 in june, but apparently that's not close enough and the company couldn't accomodate me till.
Needless to say, I went into Central Transport to get my last two paycheks, because the company will not mail those out to employees who were let go, and when I opened my paycheck I was astonished at the fact that both my checks together were short 30 hours.
After finding that out, I got on the phone and called one of the supervisors there, and he told me to call Melissa, who was the woman in charge of payroll. She quickly told me to call Steve, who is the terminal manager. I called Steve about 6 times in one week, and couldn't get through to him. I left his voicemail 4 messages, stating why I was calling and making sure I left him my number each time, and he never called back. I then called Melissa again, who told me the problem would be fixed, and I woulnd receive the rest of my money. Did I receive it? NO.

Linda,
You are absolutely correct. WHERE are the UNIONS?
The overall mentality and low educational level of today's generation ALLOWS this "at will" scenario and the dominance of "right to work" states.
I hear this all the time where toadys youth and even some not so young actually think that "right to work" laws are actually good for them! They have absolutely NO IDEA.
Unless you have a UNION job, you are screwed. Plain and simple.
"AT WILL" employment is NOT the same as "RIGHT TO WORK" although they do ofetn go hand in hand. Many people are confused by this.
RIGHT TO WORK simply means that an employee can hold the same job at a place of business without having to join the union or pay union dues, AND, that employee has all of the same rights as the union member and the union must represent that SCAB the same as a dues paying member. This is commonly known as "open shop" or "closed shop".
In a "closed shop" state, you MUST join the union and pay dues in order to work. The law in these few remaining states prevents you from being a SCAB.
RIGHT TO WORK laws are created by BIG BUSINESS as a way to KILL the UNIONS. That simple.
RIGHT TO WORK laws do absolutely NOTHING for the individuals rights as a worker. If you work in a non union place of business, right to work means nothing.
I have a UNION JOB in a RIGHT TO WORK state. I am a TEAMSTER and proud of it.
People have a choice to form and join a union in any place of business. It is a choice. So if you are working for low wages with no benefits and taking abuse from your employer, you are doing it BY CHOICE!
SEEK UNION REPRESENTATION NOW!!

CDL Requirements

You can get a CDL before you are 21. You just cannot operate a commercial vehicle "Interstate" until you are 21.
Most employees are :"at will" they dont need a reason to let anyone go anymore. There is no security in the job market. Where did the unions go?
