Pep Boys had advertised an oil and filter change on cars for $19.99 after mail in rebate.
I took my car to them and after they had drained the oil, I was told that they did not have an oil filter for the car, but if I could get them the oil filter in stock, they would give me a refund on the oil filter. I called my father to bring me a oil filter which he bought from Auto Zone and gave it to me. They installed the oil filter and filled up the oil.
When I saw the bill, it was for $45.23, breakdown as follows:
Customer supply oil & filter package
Customer supply oil & filter labor $18.00
QT-5W30 PENNZOIL OIL 7qty $3.89 $27.23
---------
Total $ 47.61

I could not understand how my bill had jumped from $ 19.99 less the cost of filter as it had been supplied by me to $45.23, and was told that since my car took
7 quarts of oil, I did not qualify for the $19.99 package. Also since I had brought my own filter, I had been charged the standard labor and materials charges.

I felt I had been totally ripped off as I was given the impression through out the time I was there, that I did not qualify for the $19.99 oil change.

Typical Oversight / They Don't "Volunteer" Information...Ask Questions!

You know, this is typical of the Pep Boys service department, in that they don't make sure that the customer understands what the possible permutations of a given situation could be.

First question; what kind of car / truck do you drive? Most vehicles take up to 5qts of oil, and that is what their offer is based on. Each additional quart is an extra cost. As my vehicle takes 5 and 1/3 quarts, I get charged for 1 extra quart, but that's expected. The 19.99 offer is AFTER mail-in rebate, and typically runs about 35 dollars out the door, again with each extra quart above that.

Second question; Did they even attempt to explain any of this to you? Even if they did not, this is a typical case of "caveat emptor" (Let the Buyer Beware). If it sounds too good to be true to you, ASK QUESTIONS! The easiest of which would be "how does this offer work?" "What if you don't have the oil or filter in stock?", etc.
