I purchased a home in Anthem and the A/C system was installed by Chas Roberts. I had heard numerous complaints about them from neighbors, media and websites, but when my a/c went out and I understood that it was under warranty, I proceeded to contact them to resolve the issue.

Unfortunately, my a/c went out on a weekend, and upon calling and learning that my compressor, which appeared to be out, was covered under warranty, I authorized them to visit my house on a weekend, with, according to the order taker, 'up to $125 per hour'. I was specific in asking if the repair could not be completed and the tech was only here a few minutes, could it be less, and she said 'YES'. I also asked her if the compressor was out, which was my notion, could it be repaired that day, she also answered "YES".

Upon arrival of the service tech, he did confirm what I already knew, 'the compressor is out' and the cost to fix it is $685 and I have to have a check today and it will be repaired either Monday or Tuesday(the service call was on Sat). Their hourly rate is around $75 on weekdays, it takes approximately 4 hours to replace it(you do the math - duh). It is, per the tech, possible that I would need freon and if so, that would be covered in the costs but no break if I didn't need it.

My complaint is not the cost of the labor but the mere fact that for $125 for 15 minutes with no resolve other than to tell me what I already knew, is a RIPOFF. I asked if I could be credited some portion of the weekend service call and was kindly told "NO".

I now know why builders use them so often, they probably give such great contract discounts for mass installations and then greed it from the homeowners who need service on the units.

So, my suggestion to you, is, if your York unit is still under warranty(most are 5 years on parts 10 years on compressor, labor for 2 years), call another dealer to service, as I found out, that as long as the contractor servicing the unit is an authorized York dealer, the warranty is valid. I called 3 other dealers and was quoted about the same price and was told that none of them have weekend hourly rates if scheduled on Saturday daytime hours and that likely, they would not have charged me for the visit if they did the repairs(there would be a credit at the time of the install).

It pays to be savvy with this issues. I'm out $125 but Chas Roberts is not getting my $700 for the repair and they will never get another phone call from me or my business and you can bet that everyone I talk to, I will tell them this story. I'm sure the little bit of business that they might lose won't hurt them, but my integrity is worth something and apparently theirs is worth nothing. BUYER BEWARE, numerous complaints are posted. Call someone else.
