I just got off the phone with Chase Bank. They sent me Convenience checks, promotional rate of 0.99 for the first one and 6.99 for the second one (in big bold writing and large font), which I used to pay my Taxes. I was happy to get to pay off the amount over 4 or 5 months without accruing too much interest. To my Surprise when I received my statement this month, there is a 3% one time charge on my account for the "Convenience" check. That amounted to $65 ( or almost a tank of gas these days). I was outraged that I had been taken advantage of by a huge bank like they were running a Shell Game on the street corner. I'm sure somewhere hidden on the back page of the Check Advertisement, it stated the 3% fee, but it was nowhere near as large as the 0.99% rate for the check plastered all over the front page. So I called and complained and asked them to explain how this was a convenience to me. They said they were sorry but there was absolutely NO WAY they could reverse the charge. They would if they could, but there was no way it could be done. Apparently Chase works on an ancient System that does not allow for reversals.
It sickens me that in this economy that a huge bank reaping massive profits would be pulling this kind of Used Car Salesman Tactics to shake me down for $65. But even more so was my anger at their disregard for me as a customer, even when I said I was willing to settle my account and cancel my card because of it. They basically said, "sorry, later, don't let the door hit ya on the way out."
Who do we make noise to to bring this to the attention of lawmakers. It's unethical and wrong and it needs to stop.
Thanks for your time!

I just got a Chase credit card last month. The letter that came with the application states "Purchases and Cash Advances are not included in the introductory offer". The Rates and Fees Table that came with your credit card application states "Cash Advance Check Fee -- Finance Charge 3% of transaction". Please read your documents whenever you sign up for anything new. At least read it after if you didn't before you applied.
Almost all credit card companies are charging the 3% fee.

Surprise, surprise, surprise!

Yes, that's kind of what Chase is saying, huh? Well see that is the surprise. They get you in their "terms and conditions" where they post the fees, then TACK on what seems like the wonderful offer you thought you had. Whamo you get next month's bill and get hit with both! Best piece of advice, pay it off as quickly as possible and close it! It is amazing how far CASH works! It is time we close these suckers down!
Good luck, sady, it is legal. However, some of us prefer to beat them at their own game!

You should have read all the Terms and Conditions with the solicitation. I have used Chase convenience checks and I have received many Chase Visa cash advances and I was fully aware of the 3% fee in addition to my credit card interest rate which now happens to be 5.75%. I have had a prime-rate-for-life card since 1992.

The 3% cash advance fee may be calculated at the Cash Advance interest rate from here on out on your statement until it's paid off. Not all credit card companies do this and I am not sure Chase will, but I have noticed more CC companies doing it. I know Royal Bank of Scotland does it. Look over your credit card terms and watch out next month.
