I purchased a Round Trip Boston to New Orleans ticket on CheapAir.Com on February 18.  The site told me that I would be charged $267.95 for the tickts, including taxes and fees.  The base fair was $207.48 and the taxes and fees were $60.47.

When you click on taxes and fees, it lists 10 taxes and fees that could be applicable (see below), but nowhere does it state that amount includes a $9.95 booking fee charged by the site!  All of the listed taxes and fees are those required by other entities.  The User Agreement and Terms and Conditions similarly do not mention a booking fee.

I only found out about this hidden $9.95 fee when I looked at my credit card bill and saw that $143 was going directly to one airline, $115 was going directly to another airline, and $9.95 was going directly to CheapAir.com.  I called customer service to inquire about this fee, stating that nowhere on the site was I warned that i would be charged a $9.95 booking fee.  She said it is included in "taxes and fees" and that I agreed to the total amount so it was my problem.

The website explicitly lists what the "taxes and fees" may include, as follows:

  • A 7.5 % U.S. Federal Excise Tax for domesti flights and flights between the U.S. and Canada
  • A Federal Segment Fee of $4.00 per segment for flights within the continental U.S.
  • A Travel Facilities Tax (aka Alaska/Hawaii Ticket Tax) of $8.00 for certain flights to/from Alaska or Hawaii
  • Passenger Facility Charges of up to $4.50 per segment, or $18 for an etire itinerary
  • A September 11th Security Fee of $2.50 for enplanement originating at a U.S. Airport
  • A U.S. International Transportation Tax of $16.30 per international flight that departs from or arrives in the U.S.
  • A U.S. International Animal and Plant Inspection Fee (APHIS) of $5.00 for all flights originating abroad (except Canada) and landing in the U.S.
  • A U.S Immigration and Naturalization Fee of $7.00 for all international arrivals into the U.S.
  • A U.S. Customs User Fee of $5.50 for all international arrivals into the U.S. from outside of U.S. Customs territory
  • Up to $250 in various foreign taxes, inspection fees, and security charges that apply for travel outside the U.S.

This list does not include a booking fee of $9.95.  To say that I consented to a $9.95 booking fee when I agreed to pay the above-listed "taxes and fees" totalling $60.47 is fraud, especially considering that the $9.95 booking fee cannot be found in the User Agreement or Terms and Conditions.

Do not book through CheapAir.com!!!
