checkthatvin.com is a SCAM

avoid that fraudulent website at all cost.

I tried to retrieve a report of a BMW M3 1998 that was offered for sale on the eBay. I paid with credit card and all I got was a single pdf file with the most ridiculous information ever.

I disputed the charge with my Visa Card and decided to file a complaint with Ripoffreport.

To give you an idea, this was the WHOLE report that I received from Check That VIN:

information from NMVTIS as of 02/25/2014 19:12
Title Brand Records 0
Junk and Salvage Records 0
Insurer "Total" Records 0

Title Issue Date 01/28/2014
Odometer EXEMPT
Please note: The odometer reading provided is as of the titling date and does not represent the current odometer reading.

From page 2 to page 7 it was all BS, a bunch of fine prints and legal disclaimer! I can't F* believe this :( Rogue companies who SCAM honest people outta their hard earned for a living ought to be shut down. and for what? 3 USD?? I can't believe this..

It looks like the website retrieves general information about the car from multiple cheap sources and populates them into an XML file that gets converted into a PDF. The information was available for free on eBay. I wanted to see the record of accidents, potential damages, no. of owners, mileage etc etc.. All this info DOES NOT exist.

AVOID at ALL COSTS!

Vin Check

AUTHOR: dajim - ()

POSTED: Tuesday, February 25, 2014

If you bought this Vin check on eBaymotors, the first thing I would do is file a complaint with eBay. If it was purchased off an auction of the vehicle, again I would lodge a complaint with eBay. What you wanted was a Carfax or AutoCheck and what you got was some company with a subscription to NMVIS. This is a national database  that some but not all (yet) state DMV offices report to that gives personal information about titles, registrations, lienholders on their databases.  This database is used for states dmv offices, auto dealers who take in trades or buy cars wholesale and need information to conduct business. The subscriber VIN check can give you very limited info legally. What you purchased you can probably get for free on a states DMV website. Even big names like Carfax and AutoCheck are not totally accurate. Mistakes are made on titles from dmv offices, police accident reports, independent and dealer repair shops.... in other words garbage in garbage out. Hope your credit card company comes through for you, you deserve a refund.
