We ordered a couple of books from Children's Book of the Month Club with no obligation for further orders, but they just started sending us books very week. We called and wrote and refused them, but they kept coming and we kept sending them back. I wrote them again and they ignored the content of my letter and just stated that they were sorry and that they could not remove me from their mailing list and I would have to just keep getting unsolicited book deliveries.

Then, they billed me $27 for some of the books that I returned. I refused the bill and they ignored me. Eventually, North Shore Agency, Inc. wrote me and demanded payment not only for books I refused, but ALSO for the value of books that Children's Book Club demanded I buy to fulfill my bogus "committment!"

These are both clearly businesses bent on defrauding citizens through pressure tactics while hiding behind the mask of being a "Children's" Book Club. I wrote them and told them they should be ashamed and that I would consider further mailings legal harassment. They just responded that they needed us to buy more books per our "obligation," but they can't seem to find any written obligation on file.

They can keep mailing me until they spend $27 on postage, paper, and ink. American's don't bend to false threats. Buy your children's books elsewhere!

(Side note: call me paranoid, but have you noticed that several reports from different people and different states have the exact same verbiage in their reports? Even so, I'd rather report this book club and people know about it.)

#1 Consumer Suggestion

Most Monthly Clubs operate the same

AUTHOR: Jacqueline - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Sunday, January 11, 2004

This is an older corporation that started back in 1960. These "book-of-the-month" clubs were more popular in the past. It sounds like you're on the right track on how to handle the situation.

To avoid this in the future, just don't purchase anything from "anything-of-the-month" clubs, because they all have Commitment Programs, where the consumer is obligated to pay full price, in a specified amount of time.

I would also recommend you keep ALL of your documentation regarding this club, because they still might send your name to a collection agency. It could be for the $27 they say you owe, or because they want you to fulfill that commitment.

Do you have written proof of them stating they can't find you in their system, or did someone tell you this on the phone? If you don't have it in writing, you're not out of the woods just yet. These clubs might take a long time to respond, but when they do, at this point, a collection agency migh take over.

I would also recommend you check your Credit Report for any delinquent information they might have added. They won't always tell you.

The corporation you are dealing with has an estimated 82 other business names, and 3 different types of classifications. They are huge. IF you want to avoid future dealings with them access: http://www.dc.bbb.org It is crucial that you enter the name Bookspan, in order to get the full and thorough report. The subcorporation you are directly involved with is a part of their conglomerate. There's no way I can type out all 82 names here, but they all seem to be connected to Monthly Theme Clubs and Collectables.

The address for the main headquarter of the business Principal and Customer Contact is:

Bookspan
1225 South Market Street
Mechaniesburg, PA, 17055

Telephone: 1-717-697-0311

Principal: Mr. Marcus Wilhelm President
Customer Contact: Ms. Brenda Stevens Complaints

I strongly recommend you get this in writing, if you haven't already, because as much as a full year can go by, before a business of this nature pursues billing again.

That BBB Report has the rest of the information. Keep in mind BBB is not a ruling entity or not necessarily a Consumer Advocate organization, but their archives are sometimes useful.

If you have further conflict, we'll look out for you, and make a genuine effort to find resolution.

P.S. You're not paranoid and there are people at this site filing fake Rebuttals, under different names, pretending like they come from different States. :)

Hope this helps.
