I have never had problem with obtaining car insurance until I just received a cancellation notice from my insurance company today stating that I didn't report that my husband has a currently suspended driver's license in Maryland. This is totally false. My husband, 1) has never held a driver's license in Maryland or in any other state, 2) only has a Maryland ID card, which, if he had been licensed would use the same number as his driver's license (the ID card has a N under type of license). I don't even understand how this can happen. I do know that he has a past due child support that, if he had been a licensed driver, the state would suspend his driver's license should he try to get one. Nonetheless, I don't see how this falls on me. He's NEVER been licensed, therefore, unless they're suspending ID's I don't understand how can he be reported as a suspended license. How do you prove you never had a driver's license? I would imagine there'd have to be a date of the issue, a driver's test, something with Driver's license on it. Not just an ID card as per my insurance company. Thanks.

You need to contact the DMV in Maryland. If your state is like Florida, the state will issue your husband a valid license and then suspend it for nonpayment of child support as well as traffic tickets, parking violations, or any other offense that could result in a bench warrant. It is a means to alert law enforcement that the individual is someone to be taken into custody should they have any encounter with law enforcement. Nonpayment of child support is a criminal violation in most states and warrants jail time if not resolved.
