Christian Brothers Plumbing Heating and Air was called by me on 4 October 2009 for sump pump issue / alarm had gone off.

Technician, Paul, came to the house and had me sign a contract in the area titled Authorization to Proceed with Diagnosis with the amount attached of $ 29.95.

The technician proceeded to work on the pump and presented me with a piece of paper with his description of services noted as:

"pulled sewage pump due to build / removed build-up / pump started working / tested 3 times for leaks and flow / no other pumps / pump #1 was servied".

The area entitled PLANNED SERVICE AGREEMENT on the contract was completed AFTER the service was completed - the estimate was NOT shown to me prior to the service being started.  Additionally, the technician had me sign the area entitled AUTHORIZATION TO PROCEED WITH WORK at the time he was showing me the completed Diagnosis/Solution area of the form and demanding payment.

Total cost of the 1.5 hour service call with no part replacement was $523.69.

I spoke with the owner of the company, Dan Foudray, who stated that that was the customary and flat rate fee for that service.  He also stated that I should have never have signed and paid if I felt the amount was out of line.

I contacted several reputable plumbing companies in the area and they ALL stated that these fees were twice was is usual and customary in the plumbing business.

My issues with this company are:

1.  Legally, the paperwork was not completed in the appropriate sequence, and was this to.....

2.  Get an enormous fee paid that is considered completely out of line and a "rip-off" by other plumbing companies and myself.

Clearly, the company and its owner are of questionable character.

AUTHOR: Christian Brothers Plumbing - (United States of America)

POSTED: Tuesday, April 06, 2010

Christian Brothers Plumbings policy is to get the clients approval before any work is started, so that our client has the right to approve or deny the price quoted for that particular job. We also get the clients signature accepting the work was done to their satisfaction. We uphold a full disclosure relationship with our clients at all times and that is why our invoices are designed as indicated in her complaint. If this policy was not followed by our technician, it would have been beneficial if our client chose not to sign the Authorization to Proceed with Work as mentioned. In addition, the client signed the Acceptance of Work Performed, indicating her satisfaction with the work that was done and price.

This particular service call was on a Sunday afternoon and our technician arrived at the clients home at 1:22pm and left at 4:00pm. Our technician spent 2 hours and 38 minutes to disassemble, diagnose, clean, reset and verify that the clients sewage pump was working properly. Most phone quotes are fairly inaccurate due to the inability to see the actual job specifics as well as most other companies charge extra for service calls on Sunday, although our prices are the same no matter when the service call is done.

Christian Brothers has been serving the valley since 1976. We subscribe to a national pricing service, and based on the phoenix metropolitan area, our prices are about average. There will always be a plumber or air conditioning technician out there that will quote you a cheaper price; however, you might not be dealing with a bonded, licensed and insured company that will stand behind their work for many years to come. We have been in business for thirty years and our customers can be assured that we will still be around when they have a warranty problem. Some other companies also do not provide their customers with the quality and level of service that you will receive from Christian Brothers.

Some of the behind the scenes qualities of a reputable company would be both pre-placement and random drug screening, background checks, weekly training, and hiring the cream of the crop service technicians because they will need to be trusted in the customers home and they are also expected to fix your problem the first time, so that our customers are not inconvenienced by the problem not being fixed on the first visit. Our technicians respect your home at all times! Before our technicians enter a home, they will put on carpet protectors, roll out their red carpets to protect the floor covering, and leave their work area clean.
