In February 2004, I took my 1999 Dodge Intrepid into the dealership for service because the transmission was making a whining noise and slipping.

The Chrysler Dealership stated the cause of my problems were leaking 1/2 inch diameter transmission cooler lines. HOWEVER, their diagnosis was based COMPLETELY on an EXTERNAL TRANSMISSION INSPECTION - NO INTERNAL DIAGNOSIS WAS MADE. I was told these lines were not covered under the service agreement and would cost $750.00 to repair. I declined the repairs.

My transmission did on fact fail in March 2004 and it was taken to a licensed transmission specialist for repair. At the transmission specialist, the diagnosis was that the failure originated from the Low Reverse Piston Hydraulic Internal or "D" Ring, a "warranted" part. At this point, Chrysler refuses to acknowledge that the "External Inspection" at their dealership may have been inaccurate and I am, for the moment, out $1850.00. What can I do??

Misdiagnosis?

AUTHOR: Larry - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Sunday, August 22, 2004

You said your cooler lines were leaking the month before the transmission went out. YOU declined to have them repaired. Low fluid will cause a slip and sometimes the pump noise you described. The D-rings on the low/rev piston did not make your lines leak.

If you would have paid to repair the lines that were not covererd and then your trans went out a month later, your trans repair would have probabbly been covered. And you would have paid $750 instead of $1850. Sometimes you have to take credit for your own mistakes instead of blaming others.

BTW Low/reverse d-rings fail far less often than cooler lines on these vehicles.

Just wait till that torque converter clutch take a dump and melts down the whole gear train.
