I received a rebate form when I got my eye exam for Ciba Vision contact lenses. A month later I purchased the required amount at Costco, and submitted the UPC codes, form, and receipts in the required timeframe.
When I checked the status on-line, it said that I had not purchased the correct quantity. I called and they said, you purchased the correct amount but that Costco was not a participating retailer. I had copies of the rebate form and told them that there was no mention anywhere on the form that the purchase had to be at a participating retailer. There were no restrictions whatsoever. They agreed, and said they'd note this in my file and that I should call back in 10 business days.

I called back, and they said the same thing again. They claimed that I could not have received the rebate form from Costco as they were not a participating retailer, and that I should have called to determine which retailers it was valid at, even though it did not say anything about participating retailers. This is ridiculous, last year I received a rebate from Ciba in the mail, and it was good anywhere - how am I to know that this particular rebate is only good at certain retailers, without the restriction being made known!!!!!
It is sad when such a large company doesn't honour their rebates even after they admit that the restriction they are imposing isn't even written on the rebate form. They should honour it to keep good faith with their customers and then fix their rebate form - smaller companies do better by their customers.

I checked back on the rebate status and it was recently updated to state that my claim was deemed to be compliant and that I should receive a rebate in 8 weeks. I'll be waiting. So if I get it, great - I appreciate it, though the experience still has left a bad taste in my mouth.

If I don't get it, I'm going to get eye surgery so that I never have to buy another Ciba product again. :) And I'll let everyone know that they didn't follow through.
