Last year I applied for a free credit report from FreeCreditReport.com. They required a cerdit card to bill you if you did not meet the requirements for a free credit report (Which should be one free one per year if I remember correctly), so I entered in my credit card information, and carfully read all of the checked boxes and small print. I unchecked the box to subscribe to a credit monitoring service, and never thought anything about it.

A year later, CIC Credit Monitoring Systems is charging my credit card ($79.95) for a service I neither applied for, need, nor want. I expressly unchecked the box authorizing them to debit my card!

I called to company up (887-513-4175) and talked to two represenatives. They claim that I did authorize the service, and that I have been a member for a year. They will not refund my entire amount, but will prorate it at $0.28 a day. Well, first off, 1/365 of 79.95 is .21, not .28, so they are trying to rip me off. However, I am not obligated to pay for a service I expressly declined, so I want all of my money back. To do this, I have my bank (Wells Fargo), investigating my claim of a fraudulent charge.

There are some problems though. The information was entered into a web page, and then submitted to this third party. This could mean that the people owning the webpage I entered my data into are responsible for re-imbursing me. Whenever you enter information into a webpage, there is no garuntee that the information you entered is the information that will be received. Due to poor programming, and deliberate malice, your information could become corrupted from what you entered. In other words, just because I unchecked the box on my end, doesn't mean that the other end received the information correctly.

This means that the dispute can be concidered my word against theirs. That is why it is important to post any bad run-ins with CIC Credit Monitoring SVC here, so that their duplicty is well documented.
