I want consumers to know that the mytreat gift card offered at this time of year for a Christmas gift is a rip off.
My girls recieved one each 2 years ago and have been saving it for a special occassion. That time had come only to find out the balance is gone on monthly charges. The purchaser gave visa almost $25.00 out of $50.00 as each girl has only used the cards once for approximately half the amount and charges of $2.00/ month started in July 2008.
I understand monthly charges on a real VISA card but not on a gift card. These are just children who have no idea what fine print means and should not need to know. When money making companies that already rip off the natural joe daily have to rip off a kids gift card I say don't buy from them.

Gift Card Ripoff - needs to be challenged!

Reading the fine print is one thing, but following Canada's legal system is another. On Oct 1, 2007 expiry dates were eliminated on gift cards to protect consumers. This was also to apply to erroneous charges to maintain the cards, but that part may have never come to fruition. I called in today about my giftcard of only $25 to find out that it was cancelled - not fee'd to death, but cancelled because it wasn't used within 8 months (bought in April 09', killed in Dec 09'). My understanding of the law is that this is in direct violation of the Canadian law on giftcards.
Card companies are enormously profitable, and I applaud them for that, but when it comes to simply ripping people off? $25 was put in their trust plus an admin fee - and they took it all. Fees? Fine Print? What about simply right and wrong. BTW the link to the law is :http://www.mgs.gov.on.ca/en/News/133713.html. It's only $25 but I'd spend the time in court to see the company be forced to treat their customers right.

Obviously, there has to be a monthly charge on the card. If you would clearly read the back of the box it came in AND on the card, it says: "After six months of activation, there will be a $2 monthly charge added to your VISA gift card. If you require additional months to make your purchase(s) please contact technical support".
Always read the fine print.
