During the time I worked at the City of Lincoln/Republic Parking System, I was a cashier and a maintenance personnel. I was able to perform all functions of my position. As a cashier, I dealt with a lot of drunks and petty arguments that other coworkers had against each other. I wasn't trained well, but I picked up everything quickly on my own. I had issues with the two main supervisors, because they played favoritism. The night shift manager was fairly reasonable about anything I needed, except for the one time I gave a customer his company cellphone number, so they can ask him more directed questions about the towing of their vehicle. I tried everything I could have at the time to reassure the customer, but I realized that this was something the night manager would have to deal with. Fifteen to thirty minutes later, the manager pulls up and starts yell at me for giving the customer his company cellphone number. I get upset, naturally, because I thought I was doing the right thing. I was aiming for the best customer service available and I get yelled at for it. I requested to go on my lunch break, because I did not want to deal with being yelled at for something that I thought was decent. That particular manager had a tendency of getting very angry at fellow employees out of nowhere. Towards December 2008, we (cashiers) were notified there was going to be some layoffs. There was only a few positions available in different areas. I decided moving to maintenance would be the best bet I would have and the only chance I would get to keep my job. I was giving one day off between schedule changes of positions. As a cashier, I worked 4 pm to 2:30 am. As a maintenance personnel, I worked 3 am to 12:30 pm. I didn't get much time to adjust to the schedule. I started having nausea, dizziness, troubles sleeping, wisdom teeth issues, stomach pain from last year's surgery, and other various medical issues. Two weeks after being hired on as maintenance, I was let go. The reasoning I got was unsatisfactory performance and not showing up for work. I went to discuss the reasoning with my manager several times. I had given them doctor's notice after doctor's notice. They knew the whole time that I was at the doctor. I went to the office and they said,"In your heart of hearts, you knew that you were doing wrong." To me, that is not a very defining reason for firing me. I was a good worker, as a cashier and maintenance. I did cleaning that no one else would do. I gave mints out to everybody. I treated everyone fairly and was nice to all coworkers that were nice to me. To top it off, the day I went to go in and get my last paycheck, they refused to give it to me at first. Stating that I did not return two work shirts that I received when first employed. The previous week I brought in all my shirts and I was only required to bring my badge and parking permit in, so I could get my check. I had to argue for over 30 minutes about me bringing in my shirts previously, before one of the managers called another manager to get the okay to give me my check. Since then, I have been having medical problems and I can't afford to go to the dentist to remove my wisdom tooth. While working there, I was told that there was issues with the speaker boxes on the credit card machines and that the company that issued them to the parking garages was refusing to replace them.
