Getting a degree from a school like City U, U of Phoenix, or DeVry U does not guarantee employment. The only good jobs are given to students who graduate from reputable schools like Yale, Stanford, UCLA, USC, William & Mary, U of TX, or any other established, accredited institution. The government should stop handing out student loans to students attending schools such as the ones in the beginning sentence. If the Department of Education would simply write these schools, and ones like them, off the student loan roster, I can tell you that the quality of education in this country would eventually rise. America is not creating educated graduates, therefore our business institutions are falling, our banking systems are falling, and so are all areas of American life.

Give loans to people attending accredited community colleges, but for heaven's sake, get those ineffective schools out of the picture entirely.

My name is Chris and I'm an employee of DeVry University. I came across this post and wanted to provide some clarification points about DeVry University.

For more than 80 years, DeVry University has been providing quality career-oriented higher education. DeVry University has been institutionally accredited by The Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools ( since 1981, the same regional agency that accredits the University of Michigan, Purdue University, Notre Dame, the United States Air Force Academy, and many other top universities.

Since 1975, over 250,000 undergraduate students system-wide have graduated from DeVry University.  In fact, each year thousands of our graduates find themselves right where they want to be employed in their field of study.   We are so proud of our respectable track record that we make the most current graduate employment rates by degree program available for the public to compare to other institutions:

Graduates of DeVry University are able to achieve their educational and career goals through associate, bachelors and masters degree programs and specializations covering 34 different career fields.  Additionally, DeVry Universitys Keller Graduate School of Management offers graduate programs in 16 distinct areas of concentration.

We encourage prospective students to research the full and complete facts about the schools they are considering.  With more than 95 locations in metro areas across the United States and Canada, and through an unparalleled flexible offering of year-round day, night, weekend and online coursework, we will continue to stand behind DeVry Universitys mission to foster student learning through high-quality, career-oriented education integrating technology, science, business and the arts.

Corporate Kool-Aid

AUTHOR: Not a Phoenix - (United States of America)

Don't buy it Jen. Someone over at the Office of Dispute management is drinking gallons of corporate Kool-Aid. The UOP programs ARE regionally and nationally accredited, but often times they are NOT program accredited !! What that means to the student is when they graduate from the program that they thought would lead to a better job, they find they are not competitive for the better jobs out there because employers want graduates with program specific credentials, not just a piece of paper to hang on the wall. The fact that the dispute manager is telling you that students all have a support team (Enrollment, Financial, Academic advisors)  to "hold the students hand" as they go through the program is a joke. I used to be one of those hand holders, and I can tell you from personal experience that there is a high level of turnover among those student support employees. Just ask any UOP student out there if they actually had the same advisor all the way through their degree program. You and I know the answer to that question. No. I hope that no person reading this really expects that UOP cares about the actual students. I used to hear the comments of the "advisors" after they finished speaking with students. They would say things about the students that would make a trucker blush. The advising groups at UOP are just there to make a buck.  Same holds true with the faculty. They used to have some great instructors at UOP, but with the revolving faculty door, they have lost most of their experienced and qualified instructors. Unfortunately, the university has become a bottom feeder, looking for the few individuals who have not heard about their lawsuits with the Dept. of Education and their shameless fraudulent practices as caught on hidden camera by the crew at ABC's nightline. So Jen, I'm asking you not to buy any corporate Kool-Aid. The University of Phoenix lacks ethics and leadership, and there is no sign of that changing anytime soon. Do your homework. There really are some schools out there that have program accreditation and genuinely care about the student.

University of Phoenix

AUTHOR: Uofphoenix - (U.S.A.)

Hi, Jen:

Our student services, curriculum and faculty are scaled to ensure consistent quality. Upon enrollment at University of Phoenix, every student is assigned a graduation team comprised of an enrollment, a financial and an academic advisor. The graduation team actively supports the student throughout his or her University of Phoenix experience, providing the coaching, resources and tools necessary to ensure academic success. We employ a centrally-managed curriculum that is informed by outcomes aligned to professional standards and developed by our cadre of more than 20,000 faculty, who serve as our content experts. Each and every one of faculty members receives more than two months of training in preparation for teaching in the University of Phoenix model. Additionally, we have a robust outcomes assessment system that enables us to monitor and improve student success.

University of Phoenix is both regionally and nationally accredited. Id encourage you to also take a look at The Value of a University of Phoenix Education.

Please feel free to call me directly with any questions or concerns.

It's not easy

AUTHOR: MochaG - (United States of America)

I agree that this type (for-profit) of universities should either be shut down or improved a lot more. The problem is that government cannot simply stop grant/loan to Americans who want to go to school regardless what school it is. As long as the school is qualified to be a school to teach higher education, they must distribute the fund to students who attend a school.

Many big private school quality is getting worse and worse because they look for more and more money (greedy). In the beginning when the school started, their education quality might be up to par. The longer they stay in the business, the less quality it becomes because they concern more on quantity. As a result, their education quality is what we are seeing nowadays.

What I would like to see actually is to reevaluate the education quality in all of programs offered by these for-profit schools. Half of the evaluation should come from a third party and the other half from students who go to the school. The evaluation should be made public as well.

An issue may arise that these schools would sue for discrimination. They are all for money, so they will always look for a loop hole to make money. That's why I said it is not easy because the politic is broken every where in the world. Also, not all business owners are ethical, or there would be no business at all.
