Case In Point
Meet Mr. Ben E. Brady. Mr. Brady is the kind of guy you hope to never have as a customer. You can simply enter his name in just about any search engine and up pops results from one of his many cyber rants. He has picked on companies from Sony to Video Professor to Gibson Research Company (GRC).
This guy has a multitude of websites and he posts to just about any site that will allow. He uses the Internet as a place to take his ranting public. Now I'm not saying that Mr. Brady does not have the right to voice concerns or complaints, and I can certainly understand being dissatisfied with a product or service - it has happened to all of us. However, he clearly goes too far.
Take for instance Mr. Steve Gibson of GRC. If you are unfortunate enough to run across this online disagreement, you can clearly see that Mr. Gibson has made several attempts to communicate with Mr. Brady about their differences in a professional and offline manner. So what does Mr. Brady do? He publishes the email conversations on the web, buys the domain grcsucks.com, and puts the whole thing up online for the world to see. Now I dont have a dog in this fight and I dont know or care who is right in this instance, but it is my opinion that Mr. Brady is abusing the Internet. From an outside perspective, it would appear to me that maybe Mr. Brady has taken on this organization and made their communications public just to shine a little light on the business that he runs and get some free publicity. Now if I give Mr. Brady the benefit of the doubt in this case, and assume that this is not his motive, how can he expect visitors to this site to respect his point of view when he goes through the time, trouble and expense of creating a juvenile attack site with the term sucks in it.
How about Video Professor? Now the intended target is a Mr. John W. Scherer. Once again, Mr. Brady goes through the time, trouble and expense of creating yet another juvenile attack site videoprofessorscam.com (which is now clariondeveloper.com/videoprofessorscam). Are we beginning to see a pattern here? Now Mr. Scherer owns a company that produces computer tutorials on CD. As I understand it, this is a little bit like the book and music clubs that people have been subscribing to for decades. Mr. Brady appears to be upset because he didnt follow the program or the instructions or whatever obligation went along with his free lesson. Apparently, Mr. Brady believes that he can continue to receive things in the mail without paying. Now I know this is wrong because my dad drug me by the ear into a convenience store as a seven year old to pay for a nickel piece of gum that I had put into my pocket without paying. Now I didnt write a book about how bad my dad was, nor do I feel like putting up a website like 7-ElevenSucks.com. Instead, I learned my lesson and am a better person because of it. Where was Mr. Bradys Dad?

Welcome!
The Internet is a fantastic place. This unique medium gives the individual unmatched access to information. This information can be used to make buying decisions about the products and services they desire and learn more about the providers of these goods and services. This environment is equally beneficial to businesses that now have an opportunity to provide consumers with a more complete picture. For instance, if you were a business that sold a product that came in a package, you would have to rely on the packaging or advertising alone to inform the consumer. Now you can build an ecommerce website that can include testimonials, samples, purchase options, downloads, whitepapers, etc. The potential is limitless and the consumer is the big winner.
So why am I writing this blog? Well, this blog is about those "one percenters, the cyber snipers and cyberslanderers those individuals who abuse the system who take advantage of the online environment to lie and deceive and even, in some cases, profit. Granted, this abuse takes place on both sides, and I figure that the consumer protection side is well covered on the Internet. But what about the other side of the coin? Those businesses that take illegitimate shots from overzealous individualswho go too far.
For years now, I've witnessed individuals who use the Internet to take anonymous shots at businesses. Specifically, Im speaking to those individuals who take advantage of the fact that they can appear to be fair and balanced in online writings and postings, but who are in fact, quite unfair and quite unbalanced. Give us all a break!
