Clayton homes sold us a manufactured home in 2008 and installed it in Montross Va. The following problems have been noted since we moved in;
.They did not finish grade our lot, now we have a lake in the backyard when it rains. The home is sinking.

.The state code requires minimum of 12" depth for piers unless local code requirements differ. Westmoreland county requires piers to be 18" deep to cast below frost line, and that would also mean that pier width should be 1.5 times depth or 24" wide. Soil under piers is super saturated due to standing water in back yard. Concrete in piers is 8 to 9 inches deep. State code also says if block is used it must be solid. This I assume means that block can be used to bring concrete up to finish grade and will be filled with concrete or grout. In most coded instances to insure that the concrete and block become a monolithic unit, vertical reinforcing would be required to achieve this. However the block piers on our Clayton home are hollow.

.Some axles were removed, and placed on the vapor barrier, while others are still attached. One axle still has a tire mounted to it.

.There is no wood beneath the vinyl siding on our Clayton home. The unit is sided with cardboard, then covered in substandard vinyl. I could put my fist through the outside wall right on through to the inside of home. what do you think will happen in a high wind situation?

5. Roofing nails are un-coated nor galvanized. The home is in a corrosive environment.

.In October 1994, HUD's codes were changed, requiring all manufactured homes to have insulation and dual pane windows. My home has what they (clayton) call storm windows. single pane outer and a plastic inner glass. heat and cooling loss are tremendous. How can any Inspector who knows anything, not know about the 1994 HUD law.I also assume that there is little insulation as well. With that in mind I doubt that the roof sheeting nor the roofing itself is to code.

.The home carries a HUD sticker which should mean that someone inspected it. In all my years as a contractor I have seen that whenever there is a major problem, you'll find a crooked inspector.

.Why are the Westmoreland County Inspectors allowing shoddy homes by Clayton homes and other mobile manufacturers? I cannot get the local building department to rule on anything. they claim that they have no say in manufactured homes, yet I payed them for the permit and they accepted the installation and signed off on it. For nearly a year, the local inspector, Paul Brunkow kept telling me he couldn't find his code book. Kind of cheesy isn't it? I went over his head to a Mr Fink, his boss, with the same results. Not once could I get any of them to cop to even the window law.

.After nine months of ownership I happened to open the folder with the sales agreement and title work. What I found in the file was a health notice about formaldehyde exposure, that says the notice should be in plain site during the sale. The state says it should also be displayed in the coach. We have never seen the notice. My wife and I are willing to take a lie detector test stating that we have never seen this notice. I told the sales person, Audrey D'Orville, before the sale, that I suffer from C.O.P.D., and explained that it was a lung disease. I asked her if the formaldehyde would affect my health? She said to air the home out , turn on the air conditioning, and everything would be fine. I now know better. The notice also said that Clayton homes could sell us extra equipment to reduce formaldehyde emissions. Never did we see the warning, nor were we told about the problem, or the extra equipment. they only wanted a sale. I would like to file suit against her,(Audrey D'Orville and Clayton )for selling us a home, knowing it could effect my health. I have more trouble breathing now than before I moved in, I wake up choking on flem. Getting back to sleep is then a problem. My wife suffered Broncitus three times last winter. I wonder how many homes Clayton has sold to unsuspecting Seniors .

.Clayton is in the process of paying off Millions of dollars to home owners they have cheated. Clayton homes would charge the home owner for the axles and tires, which should be part of the home. They then stole the axles and tires and sold them. Clayton homes has major lawsuits against them for fraud and other crimes in every state that they do business.
