Hi my name is Alan Krencik I'm 38, married and reside in Eastlake Ohio. I am writing in hopes that you will publish this exposing my former employer, Cleveland Semitrailer.

I have been employed with them for a year.
Seven months ago (feeling the need to better my life not only for me but for my family and having a strong passion to learn the repair of auto and diesel mechanics) enrolled at Ohio technical college in Cleveland. My scheduled work hrs were from 8 to 430pm. My school classes start at 5 pm so I felt there was going to be no conflict with me working my scheduled hrs and going to class.

My employer was supportive in me doing this in the beginning. On a typical day I would arrive at the shop at 8 am and pull the deliveries that were to go out for the day. On many occasions though, the company wouldn't let me leave the shop till 1030 11 o clock, with 8 to 13 deliveries to be made throughout northeast Ohio, plus do their banking and pickup their mail at the post office, it was impossible at times to get everything done and make it to school on time. As a result of this happening I ended up missing classes. My school required me to make this time up and it was to be made on Fridays.

Knowing this would not go well with my employer I asked the school to put in writing listing the days I would have to miss work (which was only 4 consecutive Fridays) im a honest hard worker and I hardly ever missed a day of work prior to this happening. On Fri. the 27th of October (which was my last make up day at school) I learned I was let go from my job. The reason my employer gave was that he didn't want to be limited to delivering parts 3, 4 days a week and limited to 430.

I feel this was a wrong thing to do. I worked my scheduled hours did everything my employer asked me to do. (to the best of my ability)

Many times I was unable to stop and eat my lunch (which by law you're entitled to get that half hour lunch and two ten min breaks.) I was forced to drive and eat at the same time which I feel is unsafe working conditions.
I feel that if you work your scheduled hours you are not obligated to work overtime, especially if you're a full time student as well.

If I was a fleet owner and I needed my trailers repaired or needed parts for my technicians and read this I would definitely think twice about ordering parts from Cleveland Semitrailer.

Again I hope that you will publish this and expose the way Cleveland Semitrailer treats their employees.

Alan, I understand your frustration, but your report doesn't really ring of a rogue employer.

You made a choice to take on an endeavor that interfered with your ability to perform your job to your employer's satisfaction. The employer's first priority is to run an efficient operation.

I'm sure that he would have been happy to accomodate your choices to the extent that they didn't interfere with his operations. But the problem is that they DID interfere with his operations, and you were no longer a viable employee.

Faced with the decision of restructuring his operation to accomadate your personal life or simply showing you the door, he chose the latter, and as the owner, such was his choice to make.

Hopefully, you can find gainful employment that will allow you to continue your education. Unfortunately, your former employer couldn't do that, but that doesn't mean that he wronged you in any way.

By the way, you weren't fired because you are a college student, as the title to your report suggests. You were terminated because the schedule of your studies interfered with the schedule of your job.
