I have had my teeth cleaned twice yearly on a regular basis for over forty years.  The first cleaning for this year was in April and the second was scheduled for October. The second cleaning was not done because the new dental hygienist said I needed a deep scale cleaning as I was at risk for peridontal desease. This procedure is not covered by my insurance.

I am retired and on social security and do not have ready cash for procedures not coverd by insurance. When I asked that they just do my regular cleaning until I could afford the deep scale cleaning they refused.  I was informed that they would not do a cleaning because bacteria could get into the "pockets" in my gums and cause infection. An infection can be successfully treated can it not?

I have always been told over the years by hygienists and dentists that I take very good care of my teeth.  I fail to understand how this "peridontal desease" developed over less than five months and why it was not mentioned during my earlier visit.

Also, I question the legality of being denied a covered procedure because of my inability to pay for one that is not covered and wish to delay until a later time.  I might be mistaken but it appears that I was not a profitable patient and this was a way for them to get more money from me.

I decided to drop dental coverage for next year. I will plan to pay directly twice a year for usual cleanings and avoid the hassle this senior citizen does not need.
