I was a witness to the incident described above.  The team that was disqualified from playing in the championship game was found to have been cheating.  After they won their semi-final game, the coach of the losing team questioned the eligibility of one of the winning team's players.  After a birth certificate check was done, the player was found to be ineligible due to the fact he was older than the age cut off for the division that he was playing in.

The team had apparently spoke to the league on the phone and asked for an exception to be granted for this player as he had a severe handicap.  The league approved this request over the phone taking the team's word for it and not checking into it on their own.  That was in fact a mistake of the league.  But they did put their trust in the team and it's parents to not falsify information in order to help them win a championship.

Well after watching this player on the football field, it was quite apparent that he was not physically handicapped AT ALL.  He was a dominant player.  In the semi-final game alone, this player caught 4 or the team's 5 touchdowns.  Not by luck either.  He made some incredible catches.  So maybe this child had a learning handicap or something, but he for sure did not have a handicap on the football field.  He should have never been allowed to play in the division that he was in as he was too old based upon the age cutoff. 

So information was misrepresented to the league to gain an exception to have this child play in a division that he did not belong.  The league should not be at fault for this since they took the team's word for it.  The team should hold themselves responsible for the outcome of being disqualified.  They took a chance by not being truthful, and it did not pay off for them.

So the kids were punished by being disqualified from playing in the championship game.  The league felt horrible about this.  But it was the only possible decision that could have been made in this situation.  Hopefully it will prevent folks from being untruthful in the future.  Winning a flag football championship is not worth the horrible lesson that you are teaching kids if you have to cheat to do it.

- This happens in various sports where the winner later gets disqualified.  Don't believe me then just search out the 2004 USC Trojans Football case for one example.

So why were they disqualified?
