I recently receive a letter from Cobb EMC stating that a class action lawsuit has been file against them, plus a check for excess funds in reserve. It is very plain to me with 250,000 customers at a base charge $96.00 per month that we the mandatory membership are being screwed.

There was a article in the Marietta paper that said the CEO was being investigated and racketeering charges were pending.

I have compared my utility bill with several non completing utility companies across the state and none of them have such a ridiculous high base charges.

It is also obvious that the Public SERVICE COMMISSION who are the controlling authorities are on the take, or they do not know what there doing. But one thing is definitely certain they are not doing their job.

If I shut every thing down and took a 6 month vacation. When I got back I would have a $600 plus elect bill.

That is absolutely ridiculous.

Cobb EMC Known for Ripping their Customers Off

AUTHOR: OHara - (United States of America)

POSTED: Thursday, October 21, 2010

The original intent of EMCs was to provide affordable electric service to rural areas.  Cobb EMC does neither.

First of all, Cobb county is not rural.  It is a suburb of Atlanta and has been built out for more than 20 years.  "Built out" simply means that there is little buildable land remaining.  That does not describe a "rural area."

Cobb EMC has been on the take for many years.  In the early 1990's, The Atlanta Journal/Constitution did a comparison of the three electric utilities serving Cobb County, Cobb EMC, Georgia Power and Marretta Board of Water and Lights.  Of the three, Cobb EMC was by far the most expensive being almost 50% higher than the lowest priced (Marietta BWL)  unfortunately, you don't have a choice as the providers have government sponsored monopoly powers.

Cobb EMC's excuse was that they were "building out their system" and it was expensive to do so and somebody has to pay for it.  Balderdash!  Their system was essentially built out decades ago!

Cobb EMC has been caught ripping their customers off several times in the past and it doesn't appear that the punishment was severe enough for them to quit.  There have been class action lawsuits and attention from the Public Service Commission as well as attention from the legislature.  It just never quits.
