Dear Mary Allen:

My name is James S. (Jim), the same Jim as with the terrier dog "Russ" who died two years ago when I adopted another dog.

Anyway, I have been a customer at CBD on Congress St. since 1998 going into the store almost everyday for either one or two coffees, depending on if I am buying for somebody else too.

Today, 6/3/10 at approximately 9AM, I had a free coffee coming to me according to the card and what I was told by a barista yesterday when I bought a soy chai latt and a super ice coffee.

Today, when I claimed the "free coffee," the barista said that I owed 44 on the free coffee.  I asked "why?  I get the same thing everyday."  The barista says: "no you don't.  you get the tall ice coffee;" bearing in mind I am not usually charged for the "free" one.

So, I had to walk back out in the rain to my truck for the 44 in small change and a worthless Thai coin as a tip for the figure of symbology in that we are speaking different languages when it comes to customers and establishments: customer is right.  Not to mention having to wait in line again.

BTW: I tipped $1 yesterday when buying the soy chai latt.  The total price of the soy chai and super ice coffee yesterday was $5.96.  I paid $6.96.

This scenario is not the first time that this has happened where I am shook down for pennies on the dollar. 

One barista awhile ago shook me down for 6, the which I had to bum from a homeless person to whom I have given dollars to before on Congress.  The homeless person happened to be standing at the front door.

If I am shook down by one more barista in my morning coffee run, CBD is going to lose a very good customer.

I am sure that you remember the days pre 9-11 as CBD Congress St. put a rock on the counter with the term "chicken" scrawled on it while I was going through some issues with the Casco Bay Jerkly and miscreants on the street as well as my landlord purchasing chickens for the backyard.

Basically, I am sick of the grief and if I am shook down as a good upstanding customer who has and will never do anything to deter business for CBD, (you knowing me by face and dog), I will find another coffee shop to go to whether I like it or not, liking the convenience of CBD on Congress.

Happy Trails to CBD, from me JSB!  And, say hi to Mary Allen.  I'm off to new ventures in the big wide world that it is and while CBD is not a place I will frequent, it is perfect coffee if not data incompetent, my being a data processing coordinator once upon a time in charge of 1.4 million pencil marks per year.
