I wanted my associates degree in Computer Programming. I went into College America, located in Denver, CO, and was told that was what I would recieve.
I started attending, in October of 2000, and was happy with the first few classes, into classes. But that all soon ended when I got into the actual course requirement classes, for computer programming. Now let me put this in, computer programming is another language, and at first is not easy.. You need full time instruction.
I entered the class, and the teacher handed me the book, told me that he was busy and that if I needed help, I would have to ask another advanced student or look for the teacher's aid. Shocked, but wanting to go forward, I attempted to read the book, and complete the assignments on my own, asking for other students help here and there.
I failed each and every course. In tears I went to one of the administators. I had had enough and could see that if I did not receieve the instruction that I was promised I would never graduate, or much less get a job in programming. Nancy told me that it was my fault.
That I was not good in math, and the teacher problem was a staffing problem and they were "looking in to it" She then suggessted I take another course, why I don't know, but she said the school was getting an E-business course in, and that since I was doing well in other course, not related to programming, that it would be better for me.
Scared, I agreed. I wanted to graduate, and no help was being offered for the problems I was having. So she sent me on my way, with new books, but asking me to at least complete and turn in whatever programming assignments I had.
I agreed, did them and turned them in. I got them back a month later, graded by a student, looked like a kindergartner had graded it. He wrote in large red letters, "Why don't you ask for help?" Duh, I had been.
Needless to say I got an F on tha one. I went into the main administrator, told him whatwas going on and what Nancy had told me. He was shocked because the class that Nancy had put me in, didn't even exist, hadn't even been accredited and was just an idea the school was pondering with.
He gave me two choices, keep up with the non instructed programming courses, or quit. I chose to go home and contact the better Business burea for Denver.
After filing a report with BBB of Denver, College America responded by calling me a liar. The BBB wanted them to arbitrate with me, negotiate and come to an aggreement. At first they agreed, then their lawyer told them to back out, thus breaching a arbitration contract.
I haven't heard anything else from them, and they kept my 6425.00 in student loans. I contacted a lawyer but the cost will kill me financially.
This school could have looked into , but they did not care. All they wanted was the money. I made several complaints to administrators, including the ones listed here, and was given numerous reasons, all leading back to my fault.
Please do not attend here. So many other students were miserable like me but were in too deep financially. College America promises the world, but they don't live up to anything they sell.

Former Graduate of College America, I feel for you!

I am a graduate of College America (Flagstaff, AZ)... I can't even decide where to start with how unhappy I am with the school. When I enrolled, I did so soley because the accademic adviser told me it would help get my foot in the door at other universities... no, no credits are transferable, she lied! And their supposed employment help, that's a joke! Not only did I find my own externship with no assistance from anyone at the school, I have been unable to find a job in the field (healthcare... AOS Degree in Medical Specialties) and I graduated NINE years ago! I eventually found a job as a DSP but only through a company that provided it's own training... my degree didn't help me at all. A gigantic wast of over $25,000 and I here the tuition has gone up considerably!

As an ex employee and instructor with a doctorate, I am appalled at this so-called rebuttal. It should be known that College America seeks only to collect all the Title IV moneys it can get. Well known to recruit unqualified people off the street with the knowledge they will fail, but have the unwitting students sign contracts that allow College America to keep the money and go after the next victim, Stevens Henager Colleges who are the parent to College America are currently being litigated for this practice. This student would have been screened and or allowed remedial course work before undertaking this degree track. A reputable college would have offered this or recommended that the student seek other avenues of education. No! It was College America's fault. This is one of the reasons why there is a huge turnover of faculty at College America and their continued problems with accreditation.

Ummm, not to be harsh here, but it WAS your fault. You should have gone to the administration long before you did and complained about the instructor just handing you a book. Are you saying that there were no class meetings? Maybe they could have switched instructors or you could have gotten your money back. Most schools have a prorated refund policy. It
is not their job to babysit and coddle you, but it is your job to learn the material NO MATTER HOW YOU NEED TO GET IT DONE. A degree is not guaranteed, it has to be EARNED. This is college. You are responsible for yourself, no one else is.
