Hi I recently rented furniture from Colortyme out of Roanoke Rapids, Nc. which started in Dec.2006. We started the contract and things were good to start out. We were paying about $42.00 every 2 weeks. Ok here's how things begin. We started getting phone calls a week before the payment was actually due, then all kind of crazy late fees and charges, and also the embarassing phone calls to references, family members and also employees.

The initial contract was supposed to have been for 18 months or when you paid the furniture off in full..whichever come first. But now all of a sudden they come up with this balloon payment which they say that we will have to pay almost an extra $200.. just for the furniture to be ours(own it)! Even if we called to let them know we would be in with a payment, they wanted to know who was bringing it in and what time.

The furniture wasn't all that great so I needed so I agreed to pay for it. I rented a bedroom set and the rails were installed improperly so they had to come and fix them. They gave me the run around about fixing them so when I got them fixed it took about a month just to get some rails.

Since then we had nothing but problems and harassing calls starting as early as 8:00am until 9:00 pm from employees cell phones and also the store's phone. We've tried telling them that even if we're late we would get a payment in but they still were'nt satisfied. They have called my job and even my mother's job and we're not supposed to have phone calls at work which was so embarassing.

So in August when we thought we were through we called to get the amount owing and it was still up in the thousands and this was not accurate. After adding up the amounts paid each month times the number of months paid the figures we had did not match what they had. So by both me and my mother working during the day, we would get relatives to pay the bill for us and they too have said that the employees were nasty and rude to them, and also they never gave them a receipt, usually they would send a receipt but the closer we got to paying them off they stopped.

So a couple weeks ago, they came to out homes which they did just about every other Saturday and demanded the furniture..which we did not give because we feel that we are done paying for. The owner Bruno sends these dummies and other's to pick up the furniture claiming we still owe them more than $700.00. We did not return so he called the Sheriff's to get the furniture..which they did come.

We did not have to return the furniture because the employees did not have a record of the total amount owed on paperwork, he had in it his personal cellphone, but told the Sheriff that he could get it from the office(this was about 8:30p.m.)and they were already closed. The Sheriff let us keep the furniture and escorted them off the property and told them that there was anything that they could do without proper documentation.

So now here's the fun part, they went to count court and filed a summons against my mother and I, stating that we owe more then $700.00, but with the last receipt showing 0.3 months and $30.23 for one account and 0.7 months for the other account owing $30.23 also. So since the summons was taken out we haven't paid anything but they are calling still demanding the furniture and also more money. you have to be kidding me. So my court date is in a couple weeks and I'll be sure to write you back to let you know how things turn out.

So in closing DO NO RENT ANY FURNITURE FROM ANYONE..EVER!! THIS IS A SCAM!! TRY A YARDSALE, FAMILY MEMEBER OR PAY IN CASH! IT'S A HEADACHE..NUMEROUS EARLY MORNING VISITS AND EMBARASSING PHONE CALLS ALL DAY LONG!! WORD ADVICE..STAY AWAY FROM COLORTYME..IT SOUNDS GOOD IN THE BEGINNING BUT THIS TURNED OUT TO BE ONE OF THE WORST MISTAKES AND BIGGEST HEADACHES EVER!

THANKS FOR TAKING THE TIME TO LISTEN!!

I would like to address the complaint that was listed on this site back in November 2008. I have never heard of this site and therefore had no knowledge of such a complaint. But it's never to late to clear things up.

I'd like to address each concern listed by the writer:

1.  It states that we called the customer about 1 week before the payment was due.

We only call customer's on the day that they are due as a friendly reminder, we don't want people to pay late fees either. Most people are ok with that. If they ask us not to call as a reminder then we stop.

2. We charge crazy late fees and charges. We do charge a $7.50 late fee when your late. That's stated in our contract. We explain to customers the many ways to avoid late fees. But if your late, we have to charge late fees. If we don't hear from a customer after several attempts we will go to their house and there is a $5.00 trip charge. Those charges are fully covered in our rental aggreement. While we charge $5.00 to go to a customers home, it cost me about $10.00 in gas and man hours to do so.

 3. Customer states that we came up with a "balloon payment". In our state, you are simply leasing the merchandise for a specific maximum amount of time, say 18 months. At that time the lease is over and the merchandise can be purchased for a predetermined amount called a balloon payment. The balloon payment is displayed on all our price tags, in the rental agreement and discussed at the time the agreement is signed. It does not just appear or is made up as the writer states.

4. The writer states that the merchandise was not so great. We don't make the furniture, so if your not happy you will not hurt our feelings by telling us, we want long term customers. Most products are made by good, name brand companies, but can have defects. In some cases we have to wait several weeks to get a special part, we try to keep the customer informed of the status. They always have the choice, if they want to exchange it for another product if they desire.

5. Phone calls: We do call customers who are late, if they don't return our calls after several, we do call the references that the customer provided at the start of our relationship. These references are given as possible contact numbers in the event that we cannot reach the customer.

6. Writer states that we were nasty and rude. We are sometimes stern. Some customers will ignore us, tell us falsehoods and  even cuss us out. We are human, and sometimes may not respond to being cussed out too well. I don't know the circumstance of the writer, but I can tell you that many of my customers are having financial problems. When they come to us and discuss the situation, we work together to find a solution. This happens all the time. But who writes about those.

Bottom line if a customer has a complaint or having a hard time making payments, we are here to make money and can't if people are unhappy. Just come in and talk to us. It's a two way street.
