Our vehicle was broken into and a brand new laptop computer was stolen in front of the parking lot security cameras at Comfort Suites in North Brunswick. It appeared to be a well set up job.
The security tape was very grainy, but you can clearly see a man in shirt and tie fitting the description of a night deskman pointing out my husband and our vehicle. As soon as my husband loads the luggage and locks the vehicle, the young man taking direction from the man in the tie walks past my husband, nods and says hello, watches him walk into the lobby to check out, walks direcly up to the car, smashes the back window where the laptop was stuck under a pile of comforters and pauses long enough to look directly into the camera and smile before walking off.
We are told by the maintenance worker and the front desk personnel that this is the second time this type of robbery has happened. We call the police, a report is taken, and the security tape is taken as evidence, although the police say the grainy tape makes it impossible to identify the robber's face.
From there, the property manager and the owners have told us a) it is our tough luck, and b) they are not going to reimburse us for the room or the $500 deductible on the laptop. After many months of fighting, they send a check to cover the broken window of the vehicle, but again state that is as far as they will go.
Choice Hotels International says Comfort Suites is a franchise, therefore there is nothing the corporate office can do and that they will not get involved. They do however suggest that I find an attorney and sue for the $500.
To date (eight months later) the property manager keeps telling me he has decided to turn it in as an insuance claim, but tells me I have no business knowing when it was filed, who he talked to or what insurance company it is. To date, we still have not received a $500 check.
On another note, the property manager refused to abide by the hotel's money back guarantee if not satisified. It is obvious from reading other's complaint's of Choice and Comfort hotels that this is common practice.
This looks very suspiciously like an inside job, and one they've gotten away with before. I think anyone who even considers staying at this hotel should think twice before risking their safety.

Choice. . .but whose?

The owners, mostly foreign families, pay Choice off.
I am a former GM. There was a sinkhole BLOCKING the driveway (12 feet across and 8 feet deep!). Choice threatened to close the hotel no less than 18 times and never took action. Guests were still allowed to drive over the hole, now covered with a large metal panel.
Choice hotels are, by far, the WORST hotels in the country, possible the world.

This situation is a good example of why it is NEVER a good idea to leave valuables such as laptops unattended in a parked vehicle.
No hotel in this world will take responsibility for such personal negligence. It would take virtually no effort on your part to carry the laptop into the hotel and keep it with your person.

Check to see if background checks are required on employees

As a manager of a hotel for three years, and in the hotel business for 9, I am suprised that most owners of hotels don't require background checks of employees. I was working as a maintenance person at a Best Western where a housekeeper tried to sell me items that he took from a guest's room while cleaning it.
I personally know of three General Managers who run chain hotels the have been in prision within the past three years. Not one of them went thru a background screening. One of those managers has made a living stealing and not getting caught.
I called The frachise and reported them, asked if the required checks, I was told that each hotel is individually owned. Franchise can make it mandatory for each owner to require a background check on at least managers and keep on file, just for the safty of customers.
My suggestion is at least ask if the hotel you are about to stay at does this, and just a suggestion, Best Western does not require it, thats the only one I know for sure.

I am surprised you got that much

I am the former Front Manager for the Comfort Suites in Pineville NC. I am truly sorry to hear about what happened to you.
As a former manager for the Comfort Suites the 100 percent guarantee is not reality. With regards to any car breakin it is considered as a " random act of violence " in that instance the hotel does not acknowledge the guarantee. The guarantee is only in reference to the sleeping room.
the fact that you got an employee to make any comment is unbelievable. They are trained to say " I am sorry, this is the first time this has ever happened "
I lost my job for acknowleding the 100 percent guarantee. I had sleeping rooms that had mold in them and when I was informed by the guests of problems I gave them 100 percent refunds. For that I was fired. I went too far in the eyes of the company. Never mind the fact they had mold in the rooms and never mind the fact that it posed as a health concern.
Again, I am sorry for what you endured. Not all companies handle situations like this. In the future do not leave anything of value in a car. not all hotel employees are trustworthy and honestly most make only minimum wage if they are all lucky.
