I was convinced by Pier One employees to get a Reward card in August 2012 after I bought an item that was over $150.   The first application for this Reward Card was denied (despite excellent credit 760+) because of a spelling error.  Pier One advised me to re-apply which I did.  It finally came through and I paid an initial amount of $55 for my purchase prior to ever receiving a bill from Comenity Bank.

The first part of this report is what I discovered on my Credit Report when I refinanced my house.  For some reason, I had 2 Pier One accounts on all 3 credit report when I only should have had one.  The Credit Union advised that I check why which I did.  I was then told by Pier One that it just looks that way because Comenity bank took over the services of the previous reward card services.  I asked them to remove one of the account which never happened.

I had about a $200 balance on my one Pier One reward card.  I started getting bills each month where the minimum payment was $25 (as noted on the bill) which I paid within a day of receiving the bill.  I always pay my bills on-time and don't wait for them to accumulate.  One can see on my bank statement that I consistently paid Pier One $25 per month.  The last bill (so I thought) I received was for $31 and it said "balance remaining" so I paid what I thought was my LAST payment for one item that I bought.  However, I learned at the store that for some reason I still had a $93.94 balance.

I knew this could not be accurate so I called Comenity bank on 8/19/13 to find out what that balance was.  The representative told me it was accumulation of late charges and told me that many of my payments were received after the due date written on the bill.  I documented the fact that I paid Pier One the minimum payment of $25.00 each time I received a bill from them the same day or one day after receipt.  There was no reasoning with this person and out of frustration I agreed to pay whatever fraudulent balance they had on me if they would just cancel my card and account.  I realized shortly afterward that I let my anger get the best of me and should NOT have paid them anything as I am planning on disputing this amount and documenting everything I have with the President of Comenity Bank/Pier One.

I wrote this ripoff report after seeing a similar report written by someone who had almost the exact same experience as I have had with Comenity Bank.  This IS a very frustrating experience.

Is Pier One's Reward card like a Credit Card

AUTHOR: Trudi - ()

POSTED: Tuesday, August 20, 2013

This is in response to the person who asked if my card was a no-interest card.

It was not a no-interest card. In fact the interest on the balance was $26.99% which I just found out from Pier One.   However, my balance was considerably low (less than $200) and Pier One finally coerced me to get this card because of the rewards which I never used.  I paid 1/4 of the total balance when I first applied for the card.  Then I paid the "minimum balance" that was noted on each bill for the remainder of the time.  I was aware that I was paying MORE than I should have over time, however, the higher balance had NOTHING to do with them saying that I paid my bills LATE in any way.  I payed each bill I got on-time.  It took longer to pay off but if I got a bill on the 15th of the month that said pay $25 minimum balance, I would pay my bill the very same day for $25 - sometimes more - toward the balance.  There was no indication on any of my bills that they were late.

My very last bill stated that I owed $31 (remaining balance).  I paid it to finally get -0- balance.  It was only at the end of my paying all these wills with increase amounts because of interest (as you say) that I was made aware of any late fees.  When you pay a bill on-time for each bill, paying MORE because of interest doesn't have anything to do with paying the increased amount LATE.

The only way I could have paid off any of the bills that I was sent late is if they send me a bill after the due date!!!  After looking at some other complaints about comenity bank, it seems that it is not just me that has had the same kind of problem.  I paid them their so-called late fees, but I AM disputing it.  I also want to make sure that they did not ruin my stellar credit rating.

If you look on the BBB site - there are close to 2,000 complains on there concerning their fraudulent billing practices!  I just happen to be one of them.

Curious question

I am sorry to hear about your situation. I have a question about the deal on your credit card. Is it a "no interest" card for a certain time or it is simply a credit card? In other words, do they still charge interest on the remaining balance if you pay at the minimum amount or it is interest free? If it is a regular credit card with interest, you will be charged interest on the remaining balance every month. As a result, the majority amount of the "minimum amount" you are paying will be interest because the interest rate is quite high for not paying it off at once. You also need to ask for the pay out amount on a certain date in order to completely pay the full amount.

I hope that your credit card is the one with "no interest" for one year (or may be two for some cards). If not, the above mentioned is the reason why you keep getting "late charge" fees.
