I recieved a telemarketing call saying I could get magazine subscriptions at a very discounted rate. When I recieved my confirmation letter, however, the prices were much steeper than what the representative on the phone had led me to believe. I called customer service to cancel, and they seemed to cooperate.

Later, I began recieving some of the magazines. I never recieved all of them, or regularly. I called Consolidated Media Services again to cancel, and they told me that my account was now cancelled and paid in full. I would be able to finish out the year's worth of subscriptions at no more cost, but I have not been recieving those magazines regularly and I am skeptical of if they will keep their word. I recieved a letter that said my account was paid in full, but I am still worried because I am a college student and there is no way I can afford this, and it could ruin my credit history very early in my life.

How you paid them? Was your checking account debited? In this case you should consider to close your account and request a new one. So they cannot accidentaly hit your account again.

About your credit history. When you last checked? If you have any concern, I would recommend you to request one, and check for any deliquency. In the unlikely case, Consolidated Media reported you, you can dispute it, by sending the credit bureaus the letter you have from the Consolidated Media that your account fully paid.

For the future: hang up if any telemarketers call. There is no way to get all the fine print of an offer over the phone. If you get an offer in mail, check the company on the Internet. (Look up not only the business name, but business name+scam, or business name+complains)
