The product recommendations of Consumer Reports Magazine are basically worthless. We bought a Frigidaire washer and dryer based on their recommendations and both are a piece of junk having been repaired numerous times. We also bought a Schwinn elliptical trainer which they said was a Consumer Reports BEST BUY and after being used less than 20 times it sits dead in our basement.

Consumer Reports may not know how to determine a quality product but they will fill your mailbox with promotions about automobile pricing, books on investing and medical care, etc. Based on their "wonderful" product recommendations I would do exactly the opposite of what they say.

If you want product ratings you are better off searching online for free info than paying Consumer Reports for a bunch of know nothing nonsense.

Consumer Reports website recommendations as useless as magazine's

AUTHOR: Sick_of_liars_&_cheats - (U.S.A.)

I absolutely agree with Joe when it comes to Consumer Reports' product recommendations, which I reviewed via the Consumer Reports website rather than subscribing to the magazine.

I am doubtful that Consumer Reports actually tests or uses any of the products it rates, particularly since having negative experiences with products I purchased and used based on its recommendations, as well as the negative experiences my sister and her family had with the same products after I told her about Consumer Reports' recommendations. I purchased a Uniden telephone, and my sister purchased several, based on Consumer Reports high ratings. Any tests conducted on the phone apparently were not based on real life use, because whenever my sister and I, or anyone in her household or mine, attempts to cradle the phone between our head and shoulder while using our hands for something else, the phone hangs up. Neither my sister nor I have ever had a phone do this and it is quite aggravating.

I stupidly paid for a one-year subscription to Consumer Reports online that will renew automatically if I don't remember to cancel it within a day or two of the exact date to the year I subscribed. I feel that this reflects an "anti-consumer" stance.

At this point, I would rather use this site and the BBB because I know that we are real people. Thanks for your report, Joe. I really appreciate it. You are absolutely right.
