In April of 2007, I wanted to get a free credit report. I checked out some websites to do so. I found "freecreditreport.com" said they would give you a free credit report, so I ventured to get it.

I specifically tried to avoid signing up for any that would give me a free trial since they made you cancel it within 30 days in order to opt out. I didn't want a membership and I didn't want to pay for a credit report. All I wanted was to get my annual free credit report that is allowed to us by law.

I had no intention whatsoever to sign up for any monthly service - not even for a free trial. In February of 2008, I discovered I had a charge on a credit card that I hadn't used in that month. It was then that I found out that I had (without my knowledge) signed up for a service that I was being charged for monthly. I had already paid for nine months before I discovered this. The amount I paid totaled $108 ($12 per month) by this time.

I called the company with the phone number provided on my credit card statement. I asked them to cancel the service. The customer service rep continued to tell me that before canceling I should check the credit report again in order to see the recent changes on it before cancelling. I was supposed to do that and then call her back to cancel.

I told her I had no need of the service. I told her I did not want the service and just wanted to get it canceled. She said she was "just trying to protect me" by telling me to do this.

I then asked if I there was any way I could get my money back. She said that I could not get my money back as per the terms and conditions of the agreement I had made on their website. Of course, I wasn't aware that I had signed up for anything that cost any money as I was specifically trying to avoid this. I told her this and she said the best she could do was give me a one month refund as she cancelled my membership.

Trying to be as polite as possible, I told her "it was great" that they were trying to appease their clients by giving refunds, but that I wanted all my money back, since I had no idea I was being charged for this "service." I told her I had not used it since that one occasion nearly one year ago and didn't know I was being charged for it up until that time. (signed up in April 2007 and found out I had signed up in February 2008) She told me that was all she could do and that if I needed further assistance I could call again later (she still hadn't said she would cancel my membership). I told her I didn't need to call back later because I was still talking to her. I wanted to get my money back. She then hung up on me. Unbelievable! In all my 27 years, I've never had someone hang up on me. Is that their policy when people demand what is rightfully theirs?

I called the company a second time and went through a similar conversation. The representative told me it was very important to check my recent changes on my credit report and that she would wait to cancel my membership until I contacted her again. I had to tell her several times I was not interested in keeping my membership any longer and to cancel it right then. She rehearsed the same thing over two or three times before I finally got through to her that I was not interested in looking at my credit report again and that I did not want to have to call her back. She finally agreed to cancel the membership while telling me she would give me one month's refund. Still, she could not give me back the full amount as per the terms and conditions.

I then asked her for contact information for anyone that I could write to in order to file a complaint to the company. She did give me that information. I will be writing them in the near future with the hopes of finding someone that will give an ear to what I have to say and give me my money back.
