Consumers Credit Union based in Lake County, IL ( not to be confused with a credit union by the same name in Michigan)
is a company that I believe to us very deceptive business practices.

They advertise free rewards checking, based on meeting a list of qualifications. One of them states:

Complete at least 12 Debit/Check Card point-of-sale purchases (transactions must be made without using your personal identification number (PIN) to count toward the minimum of 12 and must post and clear your account as a credit transaction on or before the last day of the calendar month

However, even when using the debit card as directed ( without a PIN), they still disallowed merchant transactions at their discrestion, in order to deny paying the interest to a personal account as promised. Please note that in the past the same merchant transaction were honored - but suddenly and without warning - were not.

On another occasion I was not credited the interest that I felt like I had rightly earned ( having 18 non-pin debit transactions on my account - over and above the required 12). Upon contacting CCU, I was  told that the merchant chose the method that it would be processed, and not the CCU.  The merchant ( in this case Kroger) was called and they told me the bank made that decision). I believe this to be true, as another bank card was used at the same terminal, and it was processed as a non-pin credit and interest rewards were earned.

In another incidence, they accepted a transaction from one branch of a CVS pharmacy as a qualified charge, and other CVS pharmacy was denied. How is a customer to know - and what is up with all of that?

After speaking to customer service representatives, on 3 seperate occassions and over a 2 week period, I finally spoke with Robert, who agreed with me that he did not like the tracking system the CU used for measuring qualificaitons.  He contacted Chris Hammond, director at the contact center, who denied my request to pay the interest that should have been earned.
Even thought they have a policy of making an exception one time when it is customer error, this time is was not customer error, and it was still denied.  This deceptive practice cost me approximately $78 in interest even though I consistently keep  $25,000 in this rewards checking account, and also have applied and use their CCU Visa card in excess of $1000 a month

I am senior citizen with very limted income, and this is one of few ways I can use my money to earn money. At my age, I fear keeping my savings in the market. This is my meager interest income - and   My Consumers Credit Union could have made this right - but didn't. They don't care about the customer, only ways to trick them out of their money. Shame on them! Put your money somewhere that treats their customers fairly, and has the decency to acknowledge that these qualifications are inconsistent and confusing.  Their new tagline should be :
My Consumers Credit Union
"We put profits above people"
