My daughter was moving into her new home. She got an estimate of $285.00 from Continental Express to move some of their furniture. Most of their belongings were moved into the house the day before, and we only needed them to move a few pieces of large furniture. The move was approx. 5 blocks from the old house to the new house - not more than a mile.
The estimate was for 3 movers for 3 hours. My daughter was told that the price including wrapping, and that the movers would bring the wrap, and there would be no cost for the wrapping material. The person who gave my daughter an estimate said that if it went over the 3 hours, the charge was $95 per hour.
The movers showed up, but only 2 of them worked. The person that was the foreman did not move, only gave directions to the 2 workers. The movers were clearly taking their time, and it became obvious that the moving would not get done within the 3 hours. A charge for some overtime was anticipated.
The movers left the old house the same time we departed. We arrived at the new house in less than 5 minutes, and it took the movers approx. 10 minutes. The movers came to the door of the new house and presented my daughter with a bill for $785!! She was stunned and asked them how they came up with this amount. She found out that they charged her for 30 minutes of driving time to get from her old house to her new house, when we know their drive was only 10 minutes. They put a floor lamp in a box, and charged $71 for the box. They wrapped an inexpensive mirror, and charged over $100 to wrap the mirror.
My daughter told them that they charged $100 to wrap a small mirror that only cost $9! They also charged other wrapping fees, contrary to the agreement. We argued and debated with the movers, but the bottom line, if my daughter did not pay the $785, they were going to drive off with her furniture. My daughter was distraught, and the movers were rude, and continued to make rude comments to my daughter while unloading her furniture. The whole exchange was fraudulent. I cannot think of a time when I was angrier. My daughter has called the company without success.

You Still Don't Get It

Whether you think I'm condescending or not really is irrelevant. Having worked in the industry and seeing consumers make these same sorts of mistakes over and over again - especially deciding to choose a mover based on price without doing a lick of research is truly amazing to me.
Now let's be clear...The moving industry works on WRITTEN contracts. There is nothing orally made that will be guaranteed to. Oral promises mean NOTHING and getting assures orally from anyone is a waste of your time. As I said, you decided to choose a mover based on price instead of choosing one based on value. Your written quote is based on a MINIMUM number of hours, not how long the job will take. If you misunderstood that the job would take 3 hours, that's not on the mover. He can promise you the world, BUT it means nothing if he hasn't seen what it is you need to have moved, what you're moving out of, etc.... Materials are not included in the quote, and they can be expensive. In addition, moving companies will either charge minimums for the drive time, or they would charge double-time for driving. From what you said, it sounds like they charged you a minimum of 30 minutes, which is not unreasonable, given that some companies will also charge you from their warehouse to the job site.
Having said that, your mover clearly provided you non-professional movers, as a professional mover would have billed you in excess of $130/hour for 3 men in Northern California, maybe more. In such a case, 2 of the men would do the bulk of the work and the 3rd would be in the truck "staging" (or packing) the load in the truck - sort of like what you described except the foreman didn't stage and just supervised the work. What you got were 2 guys who maybe got paid around $10/hour by the time it was done and the foreman got $15.
If you want a description of a successful move, it would consist of the following:
1. Movers completed the work in a day
2. Reassembled all furniture
3. Damage was either very minimal or non-existent.
The reality is...the move would have cost you over $700 regardless of whether you used a professional mover, or these guys. So I will say it again: Moving is not an inexpensive venture and it will always cost more than you think it will. You don't seek out the cheapest quote - you seek out the mover that will offer you the best value. In the end, you paid the same. Believe me, it could have been worse.

I currently have a complaint filed with the CPUC and the Better Business Bureau. They are under investigation and if you log a complaint it will help others avoid having such a horrible experience.
I had almost every piece of furniture (that they actually moved) broken. I know how you feel about the price being jacked up.
They basically held my items hostage until I paid them over 1300 over quoted price.

This comment is actually to Jim in Anaheim.
Jim, first of all, the writer's name is not Gloria. The tone of your consumer comment is condescending. If your comment offered some helpful advice or constructive criticism it might help take the edge off of your entry.
Jim, I know you were not present during the incident, but the complaintant had a written estimate and a verbal agreement that were definitely not kept. The movers lied, harrassed, and intimidated the young woman. Their conduct and activity was nearly assault.
I have actually learned a great deal from reading other entries and consumer comments from other participants. Jim, thank you for your contribution, and whatever help you were trying to offer, but you do not understand what really took place.
