I went to Baywater office for my lease extension on 28th April 2010, i met the representative at the office.

While signing the lease extension with the representative, i wanted to clear out the existing lease payments, so i asked the representative that do i have to pay any rent for the upcoming month (as i wasn't sure about my rent payments). She replied that i don't have to pay any rent and i am paid up till 24th may.

The whole point of me asking about the upcoming rent payment, was to pay it off (as it was due in two days), and start the extended lease. And i was informed that i don't have to pay any rent on my current lease, and i am good till 24th may.

I came to know about my overdue rent payment when i received a letter from Baywater on 05/14/2010. I immediately called the office, and talked with the representative about the rent payment. She again verified that yes my rent is paid till 24th May, and said that she will check with the person accounts department and call me back.

I received a call back in about half hour from the office, stating that 'I do owe rent for may, and the representative admitted her mistake and gave a reason that the amount was not posted in the system etc'. So I immediately got a check issued and paid my rent on the day i was informed, in good faith like an ideal lessee.

Now the problem stared from here, when i went to the office with the check, i was told that i have to pay an additional late fee of 65 USD for no fault of mine !!. I revolted, so the person told me that she cant do anything as it is done by the account clerk. I insisted on taking to the accountant, she said that she ha already  left, and i will have to come back later.

I call the office after a day, an talk to the accountant, who talked to me very very rudely and plainly answered that its the renters duty to pay rent, and it my mistake that i didnt pay it on time. I visit the office in person to meet with the accountant, tried my best to convince her and tell her that its not my fault. I virtually begged her and told her that its very unfair on their part to charge me an exorbitant late fees for no fault of mine. But all my prayers and request fell into deaf ears and besides that i was treated in a very very rude manner, which was unprecedented for me. I never felt so helpless in my life before, all they were doing were ripping me off.

I also emailed the company, but i still haven't received any satisfactory answer from the mangement. All i received was an email stating that it was my fault as i misunderstood. All this to rip off a poor college student for 65 bucks !.
