While on Military Duty in Killeen Texas on 19 August 2006, I took my 1999 Grand Prix to Cottman's Transmission. It was discovered the Torque Converter was slipping. Upon talking to the mechanics it was advised to get the transmission rebuild since it had to be pulled to put the torqe converter in. I stated I had no problems with the transmission before but I figured since I was going to do that I would get the best, Cottman's Platinum Service. This cost me a total of $2636.33.
Upon arriving back in ohio I noticed a leak under the car on 21 November 2006, I then called and got ahold of a authorized repair shop. They replaced a seal. On 5 December 2006 again it was discovered that there was another leak of transmission fluid under the car. I then took the car back to the Authorized repair shop, upon talking to them they stated that they needed to pull the transmission because the leak was blowback. After 2 days the Cottman transmission in Killeen authorized them to pull the transmission.
Upon pulling the transmission the Authorized repair shop noticed the following problems with the rebuilt transmission....WORN CLUTCH HUB, BURNT THRUST WASHER, WORN 2-3 ACCUM PISTONS, BLOWN CHANNEL PLATE GASKET, DAMAGED BAND, BROKEN OIL DAM, PLANET NEEDED RESHIMMING. This is only after less than 5000 miles after a Platinum rebuild where all the bands should be replaced, everything is supposed to be OEM Specifications etc. I had to pay for a rental car and the only answer I got out of the Killeen Office was that was not in the warranty.
Well for one they are SCAMS because according to some of my mechanics I know, they state that with all the problems the transmission was not rebuilt. WATCH OUT WITH COTTMAN IN KILLEEN!! Pictures of problems attached that were provided to me by the Authorized repair shop. This is after less than 5000 miles since their PLATINUM REBUILD. I have all documentation from the COTTMAN TRANSMISSION REBUILD RIP OFF!!

The transmission fluid was checked at Least twice since the rebuild. I change the oil on my vehicles approximately every 2300 - 2800 miles. That I can also show on paper with the oild change receipts. Also when it was noticed it was leaking before I drove it to the AAMCO to have them check it, I also stopped at the gas station approximately 100 yards from my house and the mechanics checked it and added transmission fluid before I drove it. Transmission Fluid was not a issue. I tried to post the pictures once but apparently the board did not post them. I will try again. If someone want to see them I can e-mail them to you.

#4 Consumer Comment
It may, or may not have been built properly

As the rebuttal stated, it is possible for a replaced part to fail. This is why warrantees were created...in case of failure.
It is also possible for that one part to cause other damage.
Case in point...I built a 700R4 for a guy. It was built with all top of the line stuff...Kevlar friction, billet pistons, 9 plate 3/4 pack, more vanes in the pump, hardened rings, Gil Younger Shift Kit, etc. You name it, this tranny had it. The boost valve stuck and sent the line pressure off the chart. It blew nearly every seal IN the tranny out. I pulled the tranny apart, and found the problem. Replaced all the seals again, rechecked the clearances, and installed another pump assembly. The guy has had no issues since. You see, the bore for the boost valve was not perfectly round, and the valve got cocked over slightly, and dug into the aluminum housing. This was a NEW pump housing, straight from Chevy, and it was faulty. It happens.
Please post the pics. I would like to see them. They may show something you don't see, that could make all the difference in the world. Keep in mind, mechanics talk smack about other mechanics all the time, so having a couple tell you something was done wrong doesn't always mean much...especially if they think they will make money off it. Find a tranny builder who is no longer messing with them. You can find one easily. Also, every dealership has a tranny guy. Ask him for a reference. Your car is a GM product, so ask the Dodge, or Ford guy. They know what's what, and don't plan on performing the work. Show that guy the pics, and if he is of any help(whether he tells you what you want to hear, or not), slide him something for lunch.
Good luck.

#3 Consumer Suggestion
you should have checked the transmission fluid level first

The slippage might have been a simple lack of fluid in the transmission. Automatics will slip if there is insufficient fluid. And when you say you saw leaks, all they might have done is refill the transmission. It would work fine untill the leak drained enough again to cause the same symptoms. With all the internal wear, it sure doesn't sound like anything was rebuilt.

According to the back of the work order it also states what you will perform when completing a Platinum service. After approximately 4000 miles you then tell me how it needed a New Clutch Hub, New Thrust Washer - Driven Sprocket Support to second Clutch Drum, New Lube Dam, New Piston 1-2/3-4 Accumulator, New Friction 3rd Clutch, New Input Forward Clutch, New Pan Heli Coils? It also states that ALL parts be in tolerance to OEM Specifications, Talking with AAMCO and a few other mechanics that did not occur.
If you need I can also Post pictures of how bad it was either put together or just not rebuilt in accordance with the back of your work order. Have you read that? So if the transmission was not rebuilt in accordance with your work order that is your negligence not mine. And you should of authorized the correct work the first time when it was in for repair in Ohio, not trying again to get the cheap way out. Was my car a test Pontiac to where it takes 3 times to get it running the way it is supposed to. Well if that was a Platinum Service Performed I sure hate to see what your other services are like. Just let me know if you want those pictures posted and if you want me to get some of the mechanics to post their opinions of your Platinum Service that you performed on my vehicle. It works like a doctor get another opinion if not sure.

PLATINUM WORK PERFORMED
AUTHOR: Bo - (U.S.A.)
SUBMITTED: Friday, January 05, 2007
RAY,
THE TITLE OF YOUR POST STATES THAT THE PLATINUM WORK WAS NOT PERFORMED. THIS STATEMENT IS INCORRECT. THE PLATINUMN SERVICE WAS PERFORMED, HOWEVER, ONE PART THAT WAS REPLACED IN THE REBUILD FAILED, AND AS A RESULT OF THAT FAILURE, DAMAGED OTHER PARTS IN THE TRANSMISSION.
YOUR COMPLAINT SHOULD BE MORE FOCUSED ON THE FACT THAT THE WARRANTY DOES NOT COVER A RENTAL VEHICLE. IN FACT, THE WARRATY/RO PAPERWORK YOU SIGNED STATES THAT RENTAL VEHICLES ARE NOT A PART OF THE WARRANTY.
PLEASE UNDERSTAND THAT WE AT COTTMAN STAND BEHIND OUR WORK WITH A NON-PRORATED WARRANTY. THE BEST IN THE INDUSTRY.
WE DO APOLOGISE FOR THE INCONVIENIENCE.
SINCERELY,
BO SHUPIN
