Their sales personal are friendly and seem to care about your move. They will follow every 2 weeks to show their concern. Of course after the move starts they will not return calls - for good reason.
Quoted approx $7000 for a house full for a 600+ mile move was a competetive price. A $1000+ deposit with a credit card was arranged for a Monday pickup (4 weeks lead time) was confirmed. Delivery would be Wednesday. All seemed well until the Sunday before the truck was to arrive we get a call from the 'boss' Leo that we needed to have cash or a bank check for half the amount. (Alarm #1) Could not be done on a Sunday so we have to use a credit card and pay a 5% fee for the privelege ($350)!? And if we wanted, for $10,000 we could have the truck all to ourselves and delivered no later than wednesday. I declined.
Told we need not box dresser draws with soft goods e.g. clothes and that they 'knew' how to ship Sleep Number beds we believed the need to pack anything would be minimal. Wrong! They proceeded to give a price list for packing of 2x the cost of boxes + a min of $11/per box (depending upon size) and 5$/roll of plastic tape. They used copious rolls (50+) of tape for everything - securing mats, pads and covering the boxes they made...yes they emptied & packed all the soft goods we didn't need to! (Alarm #2)
Arriving 3-4 hours late that Monday AM with a crew of 4 + driver, they were nice but only 2 knew about packing as one destroyed a large item trying to move it himself after told to get help. During this fiasco of packing I am updated every few hours of the rising cost of packing and what they will and will not take (assured earlier that if lawn equipment and fuel containers were empty it would be no problem).
Believeing I had no choice, I agreed and the $7000 move turned into $9000 of which half the balance less deposit was due. Not accepting an AMEX Card their form did take Visa, Master Card & Discover. I used the latter which he rubbed the card imprint with a pen to make the impression. (Alarm #3) After 10-11 hours of packing they left as did I to meet them (now delivery scheduled for Thursday).
Thursday we get a call from the driver that he is leaving NJ for NC!? Shortly thereafter a call form the boss states he can only take cash or a money order for the full amount due ($8800+). Spending that day exhausting the possobility of getting the cash or money order (daily limits on debit cards and only cash or debit for money orders) we were able to get a bank chceck from Bank of America.
The truck arrives at 3 PM, The driver is alone, he has 2 men meeting him here to unload. Obviously, day laborers, one who didn't know it was a house move. Although hard workers they knew nothing of setting up a house or even a bed for a move.
He then procedes to measure the distance to the garage in back of the house, because it's mnore than 75 ft. from the curb & truck and it would be an additional charge!? (I refused to pay a penny more for anything!) A shouting match ensued via phone with the boss that drove my wife to hysterics. The driver said he would have to leave and I threatened to call the police if he did (Federal law does not allow them to hold your belongings hostage). I was able to get cash from a friend and the unloading proceeded while I did.
The men were decent enough workers but unloading took 8 hours! and would have been longer if not for the help of a friend and myself to get it done while the driver slept.
This is the most unprofessional company I ever dealt with. Totally unethical, breaking their own contract statements concerning payment and likely Federal & Commerce rules/regulations.
I am pursuing damage claims as well as possible legal action for their rude manor conducting fraudulent business practices. Any attorneys interested or requesting to take part in this or a class action suit, please contact me.
If you even think of using Country Wide Movers you're a bigger fool than I was.
