The CourtYard by Marriott Detroit Mertropolitan Airport Romulus Michigan is ripping is customers off by erroneously charging there so called guest $250 if they believe they smoked a cigarette in a room! This is a ripoff!! When I checked in there was no metion by staff that there was a $250.00 fine for smoking, no visible signage in the hotel or guest room. When I checked-out I requesed that staff look at the room before I left and was informed by staff that was not there policy????? They do not check the room before the guest checks out?? Very fishy!! Every hotel I have ever stayed at checks before the guest leaves to ensure if there is a problem the guest is well  aware of damages they will be held accountable for, not Courtyard Marriott! I was given a receipt that indicated $0 balance said I was all set. The next day the CourtYard Marriott charged my credit card $250 for smoking! RIPOFF!Hotel is not properly advising its guest that they are going to go behind there back, outside of there presence and Rip them off! I contacted the general manager ryan sheldon and demanded my money back and was denied. I was informed this is how they conduct business, Ripoff it's customers and take there hard earned money as they see fit, without proper notice. Courtyard is aggressively punishing its guest $250, however passively making guest aware of its ripoff policy, Awful!! The consumers of Michigan should be protected against this unfair practice By Marriott corporation. Consumers of Michigan BEWARE of the Ripoff!! Couryard surely won't do the right thing and inform its guest they will be charged $250.00 for smoking a cigarette in their room once they check-out, behind there back! What corporate greedy cowards would do this to its customers,Marriott Corporation will Beware!! I have filed a compliant with the attorney general of Michigan and the better business bureau.

Really?

Can you imagine how long it would take to get checked out if the hotel had to check every single room before allowing guests to checkout.  There well may be dozens if not hundreds for a large hotel after a busy weekend.

No, in fact they do not check rooms before allowing you to check out. At least none of the dozens of hotels I've stayed in over the years as a field engineer.

Did you indeed smoke in the room?

Let us know what the attorney general has to say.

Is that even though you saw no signs or had any indication that you would be charged $250 for smoking in the room.  You requested them to look at the room before you checked-out...so why exactly would you do that?

I would bet that they did have this notice posted, I would even bet that you saw this notice, such as on the registration you signed when you checked in.  As for the price this is about average, just about every major hotel has this policy and I have seen them range from about $150 to $500.

Every hotel I have ever stayed at checks before the guest leaves to ensure if there is a problem the guest is well  aware of damages they will be held accountable for,
- I'm not sure what Hotels you stay at but I stay probably 14-30 nights a year at Hotels and for as long as I remember I can't recall one incident of a hotel actually checking the room before I was allowed to check out.  Where amazingly enough I have yet to be charged any "damage fees". Yes even at a Courtyard Hotel.

By the way the other interesting thing is that at no time in your report did you actually deny you smoked in the room.
