Well, for starters, I have two kids; a 6yr old boy and a 4yr old girl. My 6yr old is in Kindergarten for the second time due to his ADHD that he has been diagnosed with about two months ago. He was put on ritilin at the end of October 2008 and was on it for three weeks.
After two days of having been on this pill/drug, he started to show signs of being very agressive in school and started to throw his fits. But he had never done this before so it was not common for this to happen. From that point on the teachers had problems with him wanting to be in school and in the classroom. They did try all sorts of things with him, however but even still today the only thing that works is having me(mommy) picking him up when he starts to get destructive. I am a single mom and full time student.
I was working part time for awhile since I was going to school but even had to quit that job since i was called out of work numerous of times to pick up my son from school. Well, two weeks before Thanksgiving, my son decided to run from school to home and crossed a busy street none the less. 9-1-1 was called and so was the CPS. Now, all the CPS did was do an investigation for my son all together and found out some things about my history.
All I can say though is that if I had not taken my son to theropy for his actions, I probably would not have him and my daughter today. The kids father however I am dealing with now and says that he wants to go for custody of the kids because the CPS got involved and my exhusband and his new wife fear that the worst is yet to come if he does not get custody of the kids. Right now, Im taking parenting classes.
Im working with a program thru the public schools called the SAFE program where someone from a company called Child Saving Institute(CSI) comes into my home and helps me how to discipline my kids and how to have a good routine to follow at home. Then I will be having an in home theropist come to my home twice a week to help us as a family. I do fear that with all of this help, if some way my son does not change because of this and if I do not follow thru with this help and training as well...the state of NE will win or else they will probably award custody to their father who happens to be not around as much since he is in the army and currently stationed in Germany. Now, he has tried this once before but was told that since the kids have legal residency in Nebraska, he can not do anything. But he claims now that he is getting a really expensive lawyer who will work with him on this case so that he can get custody.
Now, my issues may not have any problems as of now with the CPS because they see that I am getting the right kind of help for my kids but if something should happen again, where my son runs from school to go home, it has been known that the state of NE will once again get involved and will eventually take the kids from me. I had a babysitter who was the grandmother that fought for her grandkids because the mother did not.
The mother aparently did nothing to help her son however and by the time her son ran from school the second time to go home...it was like two weeks later, her son and daughter were taken out of school and put into foster care programs. The grandmother//the babysitter//found her grandkids thru the foster care program. She went to court and fought for custody of the kids or adoption as you would say. And yes, her own daughter and the mother of these kids, did nothing.
Now, I had a very long and good conversation with this babysitter however and she says that out of all of the states that she has lived in...I guess she lived in four or five different states besides NE...she says that NE has the worst system when it comes to DHS and the CPS. But if you ask me though, I think it is based on which CPS worker is working on the case at the time. Sometimes you can get a really understandable CPS worker and sometimes you can get a CPS worker who is not so understanding. But like I said you have to back yourself up and get the help for your family before any incodent happens.
I feel bad for parents that lose their children because their state makes up lies just so that the parent can lose his/her rights to the kids and so the state can adopt the kids out. And I really think that it is great to see the grandparents get involved like my former babysitter, so that she keeps her grandkids where the heart is and thats the family. Luckily, that has not happend with me yet, where I had to go to court and fight against the state for custody of my kids, but I still have an exhusband to deal with, none the less...ERRRRR!!!!

#1 Consumer Suggestion
you are doing the right things

You are doing the right things. The program you are talking about is a good one. They have a similar one in Tn. You might see if you can get a CASA volunteer in your home. They also can be an advocate for the children. I've seen kids w/ add do what your son has done. I think you are showing you want the best for your children. I am glad you are working with CPS and you know who ever called did so because of their concern for your son. Better they call than him get hurt or worse....
I hope you will update and let us know how you are doing. Also there are much better meds out now than Ritalin. Have you talked to his pediatrician on that?
Good luck and God bless you right now. You are really helping your children. I wish more parents cared enough to do what they needed to for their children.
