I knew the second she walked out the door...

I have never met a more charismatic young woman in my life! I told her she should do stand-up comedy or be selling anything other than magazines. What a waste of a lovely young woman's talents!

Here's the story: Tonight - just a few hours ago... She knocks on the door and asks my husband, "Are you a serial killer?" Somehow through all the one-liners, youth and smiles, she was so charming, we invited her in and actually fed her dinner while she gave us her schpeel.

Then out comes the magazine deal... and as others have mentioned, she claimed to be in some Entrepreneurs Club - trying to win an all inclusive trip to Cancun. They were trying to beat out the boys for the trip.

So, we only have $20 cash to give her. She says it is okay - that she will put in the difference... we didn't want her to have to do that. Although, she did ask if we could run to the ATM machine, which we refused. Oddly - no credit cards would be accepted for the subscriptions. (Hindsight is 20/20 as they say)

She said the money didn't matter - that she only wanted the points. Ah... more hindsight.

Oddly, she kept saying they are traveling all over the country to do this contest for the club. That there was no way to follow up with her to send her the balance we owed her! (good grief - just stamp "sucka" on our foreheads!)

We live in a trailer park... not exactly the first place in the world to be selling ANYTHING. This is an impoverished community... again, gut instinct kicked in and I even asked her why she wasn't going to more affluent regions... but the charm, enthusiasm and tenacity of this young girl was too much to resist and her response that rich people were too mean - triggered my Brilliant Compensation training and I went into lecture mode how a young entrepreneur shouldn't think ill of the wealthy. (ya, I know, I know.)

We both waved as she went down the road... and I said, "We just got suckered for $20 bucks, didn't we?" Hubby says, "Yup," as he continues to wave goodbye to her.

I wouldn't file a complaint, except, had I been a little wiser, I wouldn't have let her do this to my neighbors. Now I must live with the guilt that she could be taking someones last money and no magazines will ever come.

I guess she needed the money more than we did.

FYI... the company she wrote on the receipt says "Zenith Sales Co."

I promise to update this if the magazine arrives EVER!
