I received an email from Cruise One about a buy one, get the second cruise at half-price. My cruise friends were all interested. We gathered at my house, called the cruise line and found that the price advertised increased when you went to the Price Summary Page. Example, a $944 cruise was $1250 on the Summary page, the second cruise was $630, total = $944 x 2. I asked about the difference and something was mumbled about Port Charges. When I checked RCCL website, the price was exactly the same with NO discounts. The only savings was a $100 on board credit.
My group decided against this trip. We are very disappointed and felt very decieved by this scam.

An Explaination of Charges

I am a CruiseOne franchise owner, but not the one who was contacted. This particular promotion was from Royal Caribbean. It was not a scam, but cruise prices sometimes need some explanation.
First, the advertized price always includes port charges, but almost never includes taxes. So the bottom line for the fare will be higher than the advertized price because of the taxes.
Second, the 1/2 off applies to the fare without the taxes. So if the fare is $1000 and the taxes are $200, the first person will pay $1200 and the second person will pay half of $1000 plus $200 or $700.
Fares can also vary because of other combinable promotions such as senior discounts or resident discounts.
A good travel agent should answer your questions and break down the cost to your satisfaction. Next time, if you think the cost is higher than it should be, ask for the details. You can then make an informed decision as to whether or not you want to sail. But I promise you, no one was intentionally trying to rip you off.
