Dalton claims to have a "Free Retake" policy. They say that this is because they "trust their students and educators." (HTTP://www.thedaltonreview.com/content/view/202/110/). This is a lie. If you are forced to retake the exam, you will have to pay another $295 for materials. And the exam changes constantly so.....you will have to buy more materials. The "Materials" are not free.

Notice how the implication in the above website compares Dalton to other CFP courses and asks the question why do the other courses not offer "free Retakes" and venerates Dalton for having the "Trust" in their system/students/teachers in order to offer "FREE" retakes.

Buyer beware, if you are forced to take the exam a second time, you will be paying an extra $295 on top of the $1,300+ you paid to start with for the course. This is not due to the expense of the materials either.

They have an on line platform that they could freely post documents that would be readily accessible to the students that take the course (similar to what other CFP prep courses do).

No this is an attempt at making more money off of a poor unfortunate soul who was suckered into believing they had free retakes, from what they were seeing from Dalton's own website, and were part of the 50-55% of exam takers who fail on the first try.

This is a money making scheme if I ever saw one. Not only are they sticking it to you with an outrageous price (compared to what you get), they stick 50% of their folks on the return trip. I do not believe the websites claim of 70-80% pass rate, either! I bet they count retakes in that number!

So if you are in the need of an exam review, go use someone other than Dalton Exam Review, at least you will know what you are getting. Or, Dalton can stand up and honor their original commitment, and actually have faith in their students/system/teachers.

I used Dalton for both my CFP education and for exam prep.  I found their online plan to be engaging, interactive, and effective.  The instructors were very good and responsive during the live online events and for the in-person review classes.  I was lucky enough to pass on my first attempt, so I can't comment on the retake policy.

Free Retake Policy and Replacement Materials

AUTHOR: Joe Gillice - (United States of America)

POSTED: Sunday, August 19, 2012

Greetings,

I wanted to take a minute to address your concerns.

First, regarding our free retake policy.  Students may attend our review multiple times before taking the exam or multiple times if they are unsuccessful on the exam, at no additional cost.  The review includes our traditional classroom review, live online review and recorded reviews.  Thats our guarantee, plain and simple.

Second, let me address your issue regarding updated replacement study materials.  The CFP(r) exam does not change constantly.  The primary changes are from year to year as it relates to any changes in the tax law or inflation adjustments.  If you fail the March or July CFP exam, you do not need replacement materials.  In fact, the only time you may need replacement materials is if you take the exam over multiple years.  So, for students taking the review over multiple years, we offer them two options.

Option #1 - we publish a free document each year that summarizes all tax inflation adjustments from year to year.  This is a reference document that shows all important tax related numbers from the prior year and current year.  This document can be found on our home page http://thedaltonreview.com and is titled Inflation Adjusted Tax Numbers 2012. This is a no cost option for students taking the exam over multiple years.

Option #2 for students that prefer our company to update all of the materials for them, we offer replacement materials at a discounted price (over 20%), so former review students do not have to pay the full price for study materials only.  The fee for replacement materials is related to research, updating and maintaining the content.  There are thousands of pages of written material, questions and examples that need to be reviewed, edited and updated to comply with any tax law changes and inflation adjustments.

Finally, when there are changes to the exam mid year, we publish supplements for our review students, at no charge.  For the July 2012 exam, we issued completely new study materials for the code of ethics, a new ethics handout used during the review and we released a number of new questions in our test bank, all at no charge for our review students.

We are proud to be the only CFP review provider to offer multiple free repeats before you sit for the CFP exam and multiple free repeats if youre unsuccessful on the exam.  Our goal is to help students to be successful on the CFP exam.  If we accomplish that goal, then well be successful as a company.
