I recived a letter in the mail stating that i had won 52,980 USD in an computerized ballot system on Aug. 30th 2008. Through readers digets, publishers clearing house, mailing addresses, computer games and sweepstakes with data base from australia, new zealand, europe, north and south america, south africa and asia as part of international promotions program (IPP), which is conducted annually.
They ask for me to contact them as soon as i recived the notification, when i called they asked me my name and ref. # after i gave that info to them they told me i needed deposit the check they had sent me into an account that bears my name then wire the money via western union to an adress they provided, i instantly became suspisious so i looked up the adress from the letter, check and the adress they had given me all could not be found, so i searched for sweepstake scams and hundreds of listings for the same sweepstake i had received, all scams.
Be careful the check looks lagit. including the watermarkes on the back, colored backgroung and micro printing. If any type of FORIGN person answers the phone # given this is a tell tale sign. The # i was told to call was a pakistanies/indians cell phone.

#1 Consumer Suggestion
Spot the scam
AUTHOR: Dave - (Canada)

Good for you for avoiding the scam.
There's even more tell-tale signs that could save the long distance phone call:
- Western Union, Moneymart -- once cash is sent, there's no trace or refunds
- Foreign Lottery -- Check the laws where you live. Most foreign lotteries are illegal, either because of 'their' laws, or the laws where you live.
- Match the phone number with the address. A business run out of Spain will not send a check drawn on a US bank and require a phone call to a number in Canada.
- Western Union -- I know I mentioned it first but it's such a biggie. If they want you to use Western Union, they are stealing from you.
- Secrecy -- These scams ask for you to keep quiet so that they can get money out of you before you mention it to someone who stops you.
- Typos -- With all that money to give away, you would think the 'organization' could afford to hire someone to proof-read the winner notification letters.
