David Crowton runs the site where he is trying to use google adsense to make money with hundreds of content based websites. This isn't a problem.

His way of dealing with his employees and "friends", however, is. David likes to use paypal, a means of paying many Internet based people for their services, as a tool to making someone stay with him and do his work, while he does not pay his employees in return.

One employee has been doing developer work for him for two months and has only seen 100 dollars. Another employee was promised 500 dollars and instead received 100, which is now being fought against by Crowton. And another person has done work on 4 servers and started working on a hosting company, but stopped when he realized he wasn't going to get paid the 2000-2500 that he was also owed.

David had previously paid said worker 75 dollars to begin work, and a month and a half later and more than 180 hours later, said worker has seen nothing else for his efforts. He even quit his job to work for this guy.

Now David is using paypal as a method to get to him for quitting by requesting his measly 75 dollars back.
David Crowton will try and tell you a sob story about his kids getting taken away and getting hit by a car to make you feel bad for him, but the fact of the matter is, all of those stories are media hyped up and no one really knows the real story.

All we know is it doesn't change a rip off business where employees get treated like dirt. I think it's about time this man is exposed for who he really is, a con artist.

#1 UPDATE EX-employee responds

AUTHOR: Joshua - (U.S.A.)

I believe the site is related to the Bad Business Bureau, so that's what we are talking about.

I'm not the one running the business, therefore attacking me personally solves absolutely nothing and proves my strongarm tactic argument, if anything.

When a "company" or "organization" acts unprofessionally and forces its "employees" away, it's up to those employees to warn the world through sites like this that this person and his "company" are bad to work for.

This saves people the time and effort of wasting their professional time to bother even looking at something.

David Crowton asked employees to blatantly rip off other sites, which is a violation of International Copyright laws, in the first place, and I refused to do it.

Alongside this, if anyone's interested, he lost his Paypal case because he was trying to make the rules up as he went and Paypal's Terms and Conditions don't cover that kind of behaviour.

The biggest problems here that led me to get no work done were unprofessionalism, miscommunication, and lack of organization, all things that Dave was responsible for, not me.

I'm a professional, I manage networks, I secure networks, I do things from an insider point of view, I make the network my own.

Anyone can outsource, and of course they found holes in my work, I hadn't done anything yet.

As far as my setting up security and what-not, I was still gathering information, that's what computer professionals do, they don't just walk in and start locking doors, not my fault there was nothing in place beforehand.

An effective network/site/company IT Administration has to first learn the people he's working with and his network before he can decide the appropriate actions, I was not given the time or the correct information to do just that.

As for the personal battles, that's another part of managing a "company", as management you can't treat your employees like dirt and expect them to glorify you, you have to kiss their butt just as much as they kiss yours.

In the first place, I didn't know until about a month in what server was what because no one bothered to be specific, which is just a little more than important when it comes to managing remote servers.

And to clarify, even though the personal stuff is irrelevant, I knew his kids got taken away, it was just unclear as to how many kids he had and it seems he lied about the amounts, about particular events involved, and the fact that he is a convicted felon and that's why he can only get away with running an e-business.

But I'm the badguy, right?

#2 UPDATE EX-employee responds

This "Rip-Off" report is bogus

AUTHOR: Luke - (U.S.A.)

I guess the best place to start is the beginning. I attended Champlain College for almost 3 years and became friends with Josh, who has filed this report against Dave Crowton. Josh and I were pretty good friends and had some classes together. I always thought of him to be an extremely smart individual whenever he would speak in class and interact with me and others outside of class.

I had since stopped going to school for personal reasons, but was approached by Dave Crowton about possibly becoming involved in an online business. Dave went into details about his background of drugs, and losing his children after a horrific accident he went through. After all of this background, Dave got into what he planned on doing in the future so that other families that went through what he went through wouldn't have the same outcome.

This is where came into the picture. He planned on using this website to, in the future, start a foundation for broken families to help them keep their lives together after a tragic event.

Anyway, I thought that he was sincere and honest with me, so I decided to get in touch with a mutual friend of myself and Josh to help Dave and I out with this whole situation. The mutual friend got in touch with Josh to help also, which I thought was a great thing.

This is where I begin to punch holes in Josh's Rip-Off report. Never once did Dave say to Josh, Me, or anyone else for that matter that we would be getting 2000 to 2500 dollars for our work. Never once did he try any guilt trips to get people motivated to help him. If anything David was too honest almost to the point of scaring us away because of how bleak things looked at the time. Basically, David Crowton was a guy with a huge need who needed some help getting a business off the ground.

Josh was hired on to help make David's servers more secure. With no credentials, no certificates, nothing that said that Josh was capable of doing Server Security, Dave gave him a chance to prove that he could do it.

Almost two months went by; servers were still getting broken into, servers crashing, and still no progress on Josh's end. He kept saying he was fixing things, but alas, NOTHING WAS EVER DONE.

So, with no more patience, Dave came up with an idea for Josh to tackle instead of Security, and that was a hosting company. Yet Josh still didn't do anything with this either. So, for him to say that he was owed that much money for not accomplishing anything is complete Horse Doo Doo.

Josh was also told repeatedly that he was not to quit his job, that Dave couldn't promise him a consistent income to keep him afloat.

As for Dave being a con artist, I hardly think that is possible. I have personally seen the court documents upon more court documents stating what happened to him and his children. Josh is obviously blowing this whole thing out of proportion. I have seen pictures of David, and his wife with all of their kids, but no kids at home where they live obviously they went somewhere!

Maybe it's Josh that is the Con who said he could do things that HE really couldn't do. Trying to drag Dave through the dirt and ruin his reputation is no way to fulfill your short comings. I feel responsible for you and what you have done for some reason, but I don't know why Josh. I certainly don't consider you a friend anymore, and I certainly hope that you get what you deserve later on in life for doing such a thing as this!

#3 REBUTTAL Individual responds launches ! In spite of booted server admins incompetence!

AUTHOR: Patricia - (U.S.A.)

This gentleman would want people to believe that he was employed? by our company, and that he and others had been cheated and not paid. His claims are unsubstantiated to say the least.

Rather than provide you words to substantiate our position and refute these accusations, we simply offer you text chat logs from Yahoo messenger, as well as a report from a professional server company. Note that ?me? is my text and meScowcroft is Josh's text.

Please note the place where he clearly admits that the people working on this project who were not doing anything should never accepted the project if they were not going to work.

Also please note where this gentleman admits that he was never employed by this company but was supposed to be sharing profits for handling the set up for a hosting server which he never did and admits it in his own words, "Yeah I know you didnt lie - I agreed to the 30% thing - which if, everything works out, it will solve my problems"

In addition, please note that he admits he has NOT done the work and that he did NOT know what he was doing.

After that notice, an independent server management company had to be hired to fix all the destruction done by this individual on this server. He claims to be a specialist and a pro with servers but admits below that he did NOT know that the database, which is the heart of our company, needed to be password protected.

Below are the unedited original chats for your review.

This is again proven by him bringing my past addiction to pain killers from well over 8 years ago into the picture and involving my children.

Clearly an attack of revenge of a person who got kicked out and is mad because he was caught in the act of being ignorant!

me (3/9/2006 4:54:54 AM): well once again I waited for you to come back so we could work , and hmmm you did noy

Me Scowcroft (3/9/2006 8:04:38 PM): I'm waiting on an e-mail from hostland, I'm a bit concerned with their lack of documentation and interactive support, but if they make good with a pdf document or some kind of large document for the panel, I'll be ok

Me Scowcroft (3/9/2006 8:14:54 PM): I'm constantly disappointing you, we're had nothing but trouble
Me Scowcroft (3/9/2006 8:15:46 PM): my documentation sucks, I gotta get a new notebook and get all this s**t organized
me (3/9/2006 8:16:07 PM): well Josh its not your work that dissapoints me , its the pressure I feel to get this up cause you quit your job and need an income , I am trying to push you so you can get paid
Me Scowcroft (3/9/2006 8:17:20 PM): I know, and I'm trying to do everything I can without screwing it up, I've been looking at ibiz, each and every tab and option
Me Scowcroft (3/9/2006 8:17:30 PM): since the last time we talked
Me Scowcroft (3/9/2006 8:17:57 PM): I'm going to call them and ask them on the phone
Me Scowcroft (3/9/2006 8:19:45 PM): I've put a halt on schoolwork right now, which is ok at least until the 22nd, when I'll have to at least put an hour a day to my thesis paper because second draft is the 27th, but I'm trying to budget my time better so that I have more time to work on this stuff
Me Scowcroft (3/9/2006 8:22:37 PM): but I'm gunna leave AIM up so whenever you need me I'm here

Me Scowcroft (3/9/2006 8:59:39 PM): they seem pretty good though
me (3/9/2006 8:59:58 PM): I asked Jeff before I brought them on
me (3/9/2006 9:00:08 PM): jeff talked to him
me (3/9/2006 9:00:22 PM): I mean them
me (3/9/2006 9:00:34 PM): and Jeff said yes
me (3/9/2006 9:01:48 PM): oh well
me (3/9/2006 9:02:16 PM): just seems like no matter how hard I work this s**t is never going to come alive

Me Scowcroft (3/9/2006 9:02:53 PM): well how can you quit it
me (3/9/2006 9:02:54 PM): I hate being called a liar

Me Scowcroft (3/9/2006 9:03:58 PM): but what does that have to do with
Me Scowcroft (3/9/2006 9:04:14 PM): the fact that I've worked a month and a half and you're saying ur gunna quit the whole thing altogether
me (3/9/2006 9:04:48 PM): well lets see
me (3/9/2006 9:06:33 PM): I just saw the entire vehicle fopr selling the hosting come crashing down because dan was riled up about me not paying you , hiring ther programmers , not paying jeff and how I am such a big liar
me (3/9/2006 9:07:01 PM): I have 3 servers that only 1 is even being used

me (3/9/2006 9:07:59 PM): my racket
Me Scowcroft (3/9/2006 9:08:19 PM): i dont handle the budget and money
Me Scowcroft (3/9/2006 9:08:24 PM): I just try and understand the computer stuff
me (3/9/2006 9:08:27 PM): there is no budget
me (3/9/2006 9:09:20 PM): it was set out as a partnership with the hosting .. as we discussed two weks ago when I ordered the server ...
Me Scowcroft (3/9/2006 9:09:38 PM): well if you're cancelling the whole thing
Me Scowcroft (3/9/2006 9:09:44 PM): what does that leave me with
me (3/9/2006 9:09:50 PM): well hmmmmmmm
me (3/9/2006 9:10:00 PM): what do I have now but bills
me (3/9/2006 9:10:12 PM): I have nothing to sell
me (3/9/2006 9:10:27 PM): I cant sell hosting on my pc
me (3/9/2006 9:11:10 PM): I have no problem with keeping the hosting up
Me Scowcroft (3/9/2006 9:11:18 PM): ok
me (3/9/2006 9:11:18 PM): and moving forwward
me (3/9/2006 9:11:31 PM): I am not even sure Jeff will quit
me (3/9/2006 9:11:50 PM): I am merely stating if he does I wont be starting over
me (3/9/2006 9:12:28 PM): trust me when it come to "where does it leave me" I really know the feeling
Me Scowcroft (3/9/2006 9:12:44 PM): *sigh*
me (3/9/2006 9:12:44 PM): as it is me that is putting the money out for everything
me (3/9/2006 9:12:58 PM): may not be alot to you
Me Scowcroft (3/9/2006 9:12:58 PM): well I'll keep working on the hosting
Me Scowcroft (3/9/2006 9:13:07 PM): until you tell me to stop
me (3/9/2006 9:13:19 PM): but I put out 2000 dollars in the last 30 days
me (3/9/2006 9:14:07 PM): and I am watching 18,000 dollars in domains waste away making 2 dollars a day
Me Scowcroft (3/9/2006 9:14:34 PM): what's stopping them from going
Me Scowcroft (3/9/2006 9:14:36 PM): scripts?
me (3/9/2006 9:14:39 PM): wouldnt that give you a stomach ache
me (3/9/2006 9:14:47 PM): yes
me (3/9/2006 9:14:59 PM): nothing on the server worth a s**t
me (3/9/2006 9:15:13 PM): I cant even login to aim
Me Scowcroft (3/9/2006 9:15:34 PM): ok so if jeff stays and does something
Me Scowcroft (3/9/2006 9:15:40 PM): how complex is what they need to do
me (3/9/2006 9:16:35 PM): well I dont think he will
Me Scowcroft (3/9/2006 9:16:50 PM): well what about the old script or whatever
Me Scowcroft (3/9/2006 9:16:59 PM): what you had up there before that made so much
Me Scowcroft (3/9/2006 9:17:00 PM): gone?
me (3/9/2006 9:17:00 PM): its trash
me (3/9/2006 9:17:13 PM): oh that one
Me Scowcroft (3/9/2006 9:17:16 PM): d**n hackers
Me Scowcroft (3/9/2006 9:17:19 PM): yeah
me (3/9/2006 9:17:26 PM): trashed
Me Scowcroft (3/9/2006 9:17:36 PM):
me (3/9/2006 9:17:39 PM): can I be honest
Me Scowcroft (3/9/2006 9:17:45 PM): sure
me (3/9/2006 9:17:55 PM): I think you fired dan up a bit
Me Scowcroft (3/9/2006 9:18:16 PM): he was fired up of his own accord
me (3/9/2006 9:18:24 PM): oh ok
Me Scowcroft (3/9/2006 9:18:24 PM): he made this about me
Me Scowcroft (3/9/2006 9:18:27 PM): and it was about him
Me Scowcroft (3/9/2006 9:18:30 PM): seriously
Me Scowcroft (3/9/2006 9:18:34 PM): he drinks too much
me (3/9/2006 9:18:37 PM): oh he made it about him
Me Scowcroft (3/9/2006 9:18:47 PM): this wasn't about you and me
me (3/9/2006 9:18:49 PM): was he drinking
Me Scowcroft (3/9/2006 9:18:59 PM): I know what I agreed to, even if it sucks right now and I wish i hadn't
me (3/9/2006 9:19:01 PM): wanna call him
Me Scowcroft (3/9/2006 9:19:01 PM): I'm stuck with it
Me Scowcroft (3/9/2006 9:19:16 PM): he's in the bathroom right now he said on aim
Me Scowcroft (3/9/2006 9:19:59 PM): and since i got bills to pay and no other source of income, it's up to me to get this s**t up and running so i can make bcak what i invested in time
me (3/9/2006 9:19:59 PM): I have his number
Me Scowcroft (3/9/2006 9:20:18 PM): i wouldn't call him
Me Scowcroft (3/9/2006 9:20:21 PM): he's pretty steamed
me (3/9/2006 9:20:22 PM): ok
Me Scowcroft (3/9/2006 9:20:28 PM): it's not worth it
me (3/9/2006 9:20:36 PM): I hung up on him
Me Scowcroft (3/9/2006 9:20:49 PM): i don't know why he didn't just say no in the first place about doing the work
me (3/9/2006 9:21:01 PM): NOBODY talks to me that way
me (3/9/2006 9:21:18 PM): not even my mother
me (3/9/2006 9:21:30 PM): cause I dont need to lie
Me Scowcroft (3/9/2006 9:21:46 PM): yeah i know you didn't lie
Me Scowcroft (3/9/2006 9:21:53 PM): I agreed to the 30% thing
me (3/9/2006 9:21:55 PM): I redownloaded aim
Me Scowcroft (3/9/2006 9:22:02 PM): which, if anything works out, will solve my problems
me (3/9/2006 9:22:05 PM): and I cant use it
Me Scowcroft (3/9/2006 9:22:17 PM): is it the new AIM Triton
Me Scowcroft (3/9/2006 9:22:20 PM): i hate that program
me (3/9/2006 9:22:51 PM): I can log on with paltalk
Me Scowcroft (3/9/2006 9:23:11 PM): whats that
me (3/9/2006 9:23:24 PM): like a multichat
Me Scowcroft (3/9/2006 9:23:53 PM): i would just use that then, does it emulate aim
me (3/9/2006 9:27:05 PM): yes
me (3/9/2006 9:29:00 PM): David A Crowton: I am truly sorry you feel I am a liar, but I cannot allow someone to call me a liar when I have no need to lie - I dont know why you have such a problem with me , but after talking with others I hear you are pretty steamed at me. I willl pay you for work that you completed , if I may see what is done .. I dont mind pying you , if you have done over the 500 amount or do more then that I will need to pay you as I can as I said I would ... David A Crowton: I am unable to use the aim client , I have a multi chat I downloaded David A Crowton: so if you need to speak to me please email me if this client isnt on
me (3/9/2006 9:29:23 PM): I sent that to him
Me Scowcroft (3/9/2006 9:29:58 PM): hostland takes a while to get back to customers
Me Scowcroft (3/9/2006 9:30:02 PM): that's professional
me (3/9/2006 9:34:52 PM): he is talking to me
me (3/9/2006 9:35:57 PM): listen to his attitude

Me Scowcroft (3/9/2006 9:37:59 PM): when he gets fired up even i can't talk to him, I've learned that over the years
Me Scowcroft (3/9/2006 9:38:14 PM): he's one tough kid
me (3/9/2006 9:38:23 PM): ha ha lol
me (3/9/2006 9:39:14 PM): I am on phone with hostland
Me Scowcroft (3/9/2006 9:40:07 PM): k

me (3/9/2006 9:44:38 PM): he really just insulted my wife
me (3/9/2006 9:44:48 PM): she is mad as hell
Me Scowcroft (3/9/2006 9:54:10 PM): I'm trying to see how that guide works, looks good tho
me (3/9/2006 9:55:45 PM): they said for you to call and talk to louie
Me Scowcroft (3/9/2006 9:55:53 PM): ok
me (3/9/2006 10:45:14 PM): s**t is hitting the fan
me (3/9/2006 10:45:32 PM): Dan says he will turn you guys against me
me (3/9/2006 10:46:04 PM): he has said I am doing shady deals behind your guys back
me (3/9/2006 10:46:10 PM): insulted my wife
me (3/9/2006 10:46:27 PM): and tons of diludided things
me (3/9/2006 11:22:49 PM): well appearantly Jeff has quit too
me (3/9/2006 11:23:15 PM): the guys wont be able to make the hosting site work
Me Scowcroft (3/9/2006 11:23:30 PM): soit's over
me (3/9/2006 11:23:44 PM): because as it looks they are going to be trying to save the 1500
me (3/9/2006 11:23:52 PM): unless Jeff is staying
Me Scowcroft (3/9/2006 11:24:35 PM): hm
me (3/9/2006 11:26:12 PM): I lost 1.5 months of waiting , the price of 2 servers for 2 months and the money I sent Dan you and Jeff cause it looks pretty ugly - not to mention I just added renewed 500 in domains
Me Scowcroft (3/9/2006 11:27:22 PM): i just lost 1.5 months of attempted work unless Jeff is stayting
me (3/9/2006 11:30:02 PM): no ............
me (3/9/2006 11:30:42 PM): I am saying that as it looks we are going to be slower to pick up the peices and get this stuff going again
me (3/9/2006 11:30:51 PM): it will delay us again
Me Scowcroft (3/9/2006 11:31:28 PM): just the 1500 thing tho
Me Scowcroft (3/9/2006 11:31:34 PM): which is important
Me Scowcroft (3/9/2006 11:31:44 PM): but unrelated to the hosting
Me Scowcroft (3/9/2006 11:31:48 PM): what are the other two doingn right now
me (3/9/2006 11:33:52 PM): the 1500 sites is where we were going to make alot of sales for the hosting
me (3/9/2006 11:34:27 PM): it was a huge part of our marketing plan
me (3/9/2006 11:35:55 PM): and I must direct my resources toward them as it is a huge investmennt
Me Scowcroft (3/9/2006 11:37:20 PM): ok
Me Scowcroft (3/9/2006 11:37:42 PM): so let me try and figure out the hosting stuff, and if need by I'll design graphics for them
me (3/9/2006 11:38:24 PM): ok -
me (3/9/2006 11:38:51 PM): doesnt seem that Jeff wants to talk to me no more
me (3/9/2006 11:38:58 PM): is he online for yo
me (3/9/2006 11:45:43 PM): The server was unable to lookup an an A entry for its hostname ( This is generally because the entry was never added. However this could also be the result of your nameserver(s) being down. If you would like to attempt to automaticlly add the entry
Me Scowcroft (3/9/2006 11:46:52 PM): for some reason that keeps popping up
me (3/9/2006 11:47:02 PM): yeah
me (3/9/2006 11:47:17 PM): I am going to just get a cvompany to handle it
me (3/9/2006 11:47:23 PM): when I can
me (3/9/2006 11:47:43 PM): they charge 25 per server per month
me (3/9/2006 11:47:53 PM): to keep it up
Me Scowcroft (3/9/2006 11:48:07 PM): what are our two hosting plans
me (3/9/2006 11:48:14 PM): 98 cents
Me Scowcroft (3/9/2006 11:48:18 PM): that we would theoretically be using hostland to offer
Me Scowcroft (3/9/2006 11:48:25 PM): and the 8.88
me (3/9/2006 11:48:28 PM): yes
Me Scowcroft (3/9/2006 11:48:35 PM): I'm trying to figure out money
me (3/9/2006 11:48:38 PM): and a 50 cent account
me (3/9/2006 11:48:52 PM): 100 mmeg
Me Scowcroft (3/9/2006 11:48:54 PM): I'm trying to see if 30% is going to even make it worth it
me (3/9/2006 11:49:04 PM): lol
me (3/9/2006 11:49:09 PM): ok
me (3/9/2006 11:49:14 PM): figure it out
me (3/9/2006 11:49:28 PM): ok I am going to rest
Me Scowcroft (3/9/2006 11:49:33 PM): we'd need like 5000 of the 50 cent or 98 cent to be worth it, that's not even talking abou thte 8.88
me (3/9/2006 11:49:34 PM): I am very stressed
Me Scowcroft (3/9/2006 11:49:36 PM): ok
me (3/9/2006 11:49:59 PM): thats where we make our money is the 8.88
Me Scowcroft (3/9/2006 11:50:12 PM): definitely
me (3/9/2006 11:50:16 PM): the 98 cents are not hard to sell 5000
Me Scowcroft (3/9/2006 11:50:16 PM): that is the big one
Me Scowcroft (3/9/2006 11:50:30 PM): gimme an estimate please
me (3/9/2006 11:50:42 PM): I am afraid to say anything
me (3/9/2006 11:50:51 PM): with the 1500 sites up
me (3/9/2006 11:51:13 PM): 5 sales per week per site minimum
Me Scowcroft (3/9/2006 11:51:29 PM): ok
me (3/9/2006 11:51:34 PM): but say 3
Me Scowcroft (3/9/2006 11:51:48 PM): just wanted some reassurance to let me know whether or not its worth it to keep going
me (3/9/2006 11:51:50 PM): I mean it will take a few weeks
me (3/9/2006 11:51:55 PM): thats for sure
me (3/9/2006 11:52:06 PM): but word spreads fast if done right
me (3/9/2006 11:52:10 PM): but then again
Me Scowcroft (3/9/2006 11:52:11 PM): ok go rest
me (3/9/2006 11:52:18 PM): seee you
me (3/9/2006 11:52:43 PM): i wont be around much tonight or tomorrow aftewr sundown
Me Scowcroft (3/9/2006 11:53:12 PM): i know, I'll be up working on the ibiz stuff
me (3/9/2006 11:53:22 PM): ok
Me Scowcroft (3/9/2006 11:53:24 PM): relax with your wife
me (3/9/2006 11:53:29 PM): k
Me Scowcroft (3/9/2006 11:53:32 PM): forget about all this stuff for a while

Another Chat
me (3/10/2006 12:26:17 AM): good news
Me Scowcroft (3/10/2006 12:26:33 AM): what's up

Me Scowcroft (3/10/2006 12:26:59 AM): yeah i figured, he's a little more level headed
Me Scowcroft (3/10/2006 12:27:09 AM): just like me
me (3/10/2006 12:27:17 AM): lol
Me Scowcroft (3/10/2006 12:27:23 AM): hehe
Me Scowcroft (3/10/2006 12:27:29 AM): ok go back to resting
Me Scowcroft (3/10/2006 12:27:36 AM): this guide is gold
Me Scowcroft (3/10/2006 12:27:40 AM): thanks for giving me the link
me (3/10/2006 12:27:51 AM): yeah after I am done talking with Jeff
Me Scowcroft (3/10/2006 12:27:54 AM): kk
me (3/10/2006 12:58:31 AM): I got a message back from the server company about php-gd
me (3/10/2006 12:59:06 AM): You may wish to contact the developers of Centos to see if they have a solution for you. Thank you, Kevin Layered Technologies NOC Engineer - Team Lead
me (3/10/2006 4:55:48 PM): hello
me (3/10/2006 4:56:06 PM): I went through the server
me (3/10/2006 4:56:09 PM): servers
Me Scowcroft (3/10/2006 4:56:11 PM): hey, lost power most of the city here this morning
Me Scowcroft (3/10/2006 4:56:12 PM): yeah
me (3/10/2006 4:56:32 PM): the annonymous ftp was active on both
me (3/10/2006 4:56:45 PM): the db had no passwords on them
Me Scowcroft (3/10/2006 4:56:50 PM): yeah i turned em on a day ago
Me Scowcroft (3/10/2006 4:57:00 PM): i didn't know i was supposed to set one
me (3/10/2006 4:57:13 PM): well it was wide open
me (3/10/2006 4:57:51 PM): I contacted my uncle who works for the milirtary
me (3/10/2006 4:58:15 PM): and asked him to check the servers security from the outside
me (3/10/2006 4:58:23 PM): gave him no pw
me (3/10/2006 4:58:42 PM): and he said the were very vulnerable
Me Scowcroft (3/10/2006 4:58:58 PM): yeah they have been
me (3/10/2006 4:59:20 PM): I hired a independant server management firm to manage the server
me (3/10/2006 5:00:39 PM): they now control the servers and are hardening them - wiping all the stuf off and redoing the hardening
me (3/10/2006 5:01:11 PM): I cant have wide open servers
Me Scowcroft (3/10/2006 5:02:33 PM): i see, so you'll be cutting them checks then
me (3/10/2006 5:03:04 PM): well its actually very cheap
me (3/10/2006 5:04:02 PM): server set up
me (3/10/2006 5:04:27 PM): and any and all work needed is included in them
me (3/10/2006 5:04:48 PM):
Me Scowcroft (3/10/2006 5:04:51 PM): that sounds good
me (3/10/2006 5:07:58 PM): after the server company said they were not set up correctly , I contacted this server mgmt company , I signed up with them and they checked the set up and security and said the same that the server company said that the servers are set up wrong and need basically need to be redone to insure against loss
me (3/10/2006 5:08:08 PM): so they will be formatted
me (3/10/2006 5:08:16 PM): and re-installed
Me Scowcroft (3/10/2006 5:08:39 PM): how does formatting fix anything
Me Scowcroft (3/10/2006 5:08:54 PM): i think they just wanna charge ya for another reload
Me Scowcroft (3/10/2006 5:09:28 PM): i mean yeah it's set up incorrectly
me (3/10/2006 5:09:31 PM): well because the security is so bad , there is no telling whats on it and it is included in my package
Me Scowcroft (3/10/2006 5:09:31 PM): but it doesn't need a format
Me Scowcroft (3/10/2006 5:09:43 PM): oh
me (3/10/2006 5:10:05 PM): I spoke with the server company and they will do both for 50
me (3/10/2006 5:10:23 PM): there is no way to guarantee its clean
me (3/10/2006 5:10:41 PM): with the amount of vulnerabilities
Me Scowcroft (3/10/2006 5:10:57 PM): problem is we could just be copying that stuff over again and again from the original destination
Me Scowcroft (3/10/2006 5:11:06 PM): they need to figure out how to secure the data too
me (3/10/2006 5:11:19 PM): well we have solved that to
Me Scowcroft (3/10/2006 5:11:23 PM): the whm scanner is crap
Me Scowcroft (3/10/2006 5:11:26 PM): they need a real scanner
Me Scowcroft (3/10/2006 5:11:31 PM): not just for vulnerabilities
Me Scowcroft (3/10/2006 5:11:34 PM): but for viruses
me (3/10/2006 5:11:45 PM): thats not how they scanned it
me (3/10/2006 5:12:11 PM): anyway
me (3/10/2006 5:12:25 PM): I wont be putting any old stuff on there
Me Scowcroft (3/10/2006 5:12:41 PM): well that solves that then
Me Scowcroft (3/10/2006 5:12:42 PM): heh
me (3/10/2006 5:13:30 PM): unless it is scanned by this server spyware/virus/ detector
me (3/10/2006 5:13:48 PM): that scans it before upload
me (3/10/2006 5:14:34 PM): anyway
me (3/10/2006 5:14:46 PM): I got alot done today
me (3/10/2006 5:15:34 PM): how did it go last night with the set up
Me Scowcroft (3/10/2006 5:19:10 PM): the instructions are pretty comprehensive, but it didn't really answer any new questions, I've been trying to find a forum or something that deals with it
Me Scowcroft (3/10/2006 5:19:13 PM): I've been looking at
Me Scowcroft (3/10/2006 5:19:42 PM): this mexican stuff really turns me off to the idea with ibiz
Me Scowcroft (3/10/2006 5:19:56 PM): not prejudiced, just they didn't port it to english very well
me (3/10/2006 5:20:37 PM): that one wont work
Me Scowcroft (3/10/2006 5:20:43 PM): the prices suck
me (3/10/2006 5:20:47 PM): they take the money
me (3/10/2006 5:20:56 PM): they own the accounts
me (3/10/2006 5:21:17 PM): they can cancel you and keep them
Me Scowcroft (3/10/2006 5:21:25 PM): ohhhhh
Me Scowcroft (3/10/2006 5:21:34 PM): what the hell that's crap
me (3/10/2006 5:22:31 PM): well common sense says if the do the billing and they hadle it all , then they own it all ... you are just an affiliate building their customer base
Me Scowcroft (3/10/2006 5:24:16 PM): hm
Me Scowcroft (3/10/2006 5:26:26 PM):
Me Scowcroft (3/10/2006 5:26:28 PM): what about them
me (3/10/2006 5:29:39 PM): cant offer close to what hostland offers
me (3/10/2006 5:30:03 PM): 50 GB (50,000 MB) Disk Space! 50 GB Bandwidth! Host UNLIMITED domain names! UNLIMITED emails! 50 Control Panel Accounts! Create your own web hosting plans & prices! All sales goes directly to your
Me Scowcroft (3/10/2006 5:30:15 PM): yeah but hostland is a chop shop haha, there's typos all over the place
Me Scowcroft (3/10/2006 5:30:17 PM): no not that plan
Me Scowcroft (3/10/2006 5:30:21 PM): hold on i'll show ya
Me Scowcroft (3/10/2006 5:30:28 PM):
Me Scowcroft (3/10/2006 5:30:30 PM): this special
Me Scowcroft (3/10/2006 5:31:17 PM): i guess hostland still better
Me Scowcroft (3/10/2006 5:31:25 PM): i wish we didn't have to use ibiz
me (3/10/2006 5:31:28 PM): yeah
me (3/10/2006 5:31:41 PM): I looked at their other plans to
me (3/10/2006 5:32:38 PM): I mean its a way to get started and earn money , when there is more money better servers can be ordered and sites can be moved over
Me Scowcroft (3/10/2006 5:32:50 PM): i know but i dont even understand it
Me Scowcroft (3/10/2006 5:33:05 PM): it's not the easiest thing to use
me (3/10/2006 5:33:33 PM): I can ask Ian and Paul to look at it - and see if they can just integrate our site into theirs
Me Scowcroft (3/10/2006 5:34:16 PM): i mean, you'd think that it'd be all in plain english how to set up the packages, but i go where the packages are and i can't find anything about setting the size of mb of disk space per package
Me Scowcroft (3/10/2006 5:34:21 PM): the simplest thing becomes a huge chore
me (3/10/2006 5:35:15 PM): just send them a request to set up the packages
Me Scowcroft (3/10/2006 5:38:33 PM): i will
Me Scowcroft (3/10/2006 5:39:07 PM): i didnt even think of that
Me Scowcroft (3/10/2006 5:39:24 PM): maybe while they are at it they can show me how over the phone too

Me Scowcroft (3/10/2006 5:40:23 PM): later

Here is a report from a Professional Bonded Server management company shows how unset up the servers were that Josh claims to have set up - I contend HE IS LYING

Response: David,

The following is a list of software and configurations that we have now installed to secure, optimize and harden your server. The following software is not resource intensive, therefore you will not see any decrease in performance.

We've installed CHKRootKit, which is a program that looks for known signatures in trojaned system binaries, it basically detects if your system has been compomised. We've ran CHKRootKit on your system and the output returned clean.

We've installed Rootkit Hunter, which is scanning tool to find most types of exploits (backdoors, suspicious files, md5 hash comparisons, and is over 99% accurate in detecting such exploits. We've scanned your system with the Rootkit Hunter and it reported that your system is clean.

APF Firewall has been installed and configured to only allow traffic on the ports that are used.
In addition, we've configured the Anti-DOS function in APF. This additional module helps mitigate and prevent certain types of DOS (denial of service) attacks to your server. A daily cron has been inserted to flush the firewall deny list. This prevents common problems associated with the deny list growing so huge, such as hanging upon bootup, slow down in server performance, etc.

BFD (Brute Force Detection) has been installed. This program works real time in conjunction with APF firewall to block any IP Addresses of users that fail authentication more than 3 times in 10 minutes.

Logwatch has been installed now. This program parses through your server's logs and reports to you via e-mail on a daily basis with tabulated information.

SIM (System Integrity Monitor) has been installed on your server now, this software checks all services 24x7 and restarts them if they are down. An e-mail is dispatched a downed service is detected and restarted.

Apache (HTTPD) web server has been optimized and secured.

MySQL Server has been optimized to perform at it's best under the most common and standard environments.

System Configuration File host.conf has been secured and hardened to prevent DNS lookup poisoning and also provide protection against spoofs.

System Configuration File nsswitch.conf has been secured and hardened. We have also optimized it to perform DNS lookups more efficiently.

System Configuration File sysctl.conf has been secured and hardened to help prevent the TCP/IP stack from syn-flood attacks. It is also configured to prevet other various and similar network abuse.

All of your vulnerable directories (/tmp, /var/tmp, /dev/shm and /usr/local/apache/proxy) have been reviewed and are clean now.

/tmp and /var/tmp have been hardened and secured to prevent the execution of malicious scripts

The old archived logs files that have been rotated located in /var/log have been removed to free up space in the /var partition/directory.

MyTOP has been installed. This is an administrative console based tool for monitoring MySQL threads/processes and performance.

We have setup a root login notification script and logger. This will send an e-mail to 'root' everytime someone logs into your server as root. Also, it will keep track of all logins in a history file located in /var/log/rootlogins

SPRI has been installed now. This program changes the priority of different processes in accordance to their level of importance. You should see at least a 5-20% decrease in the average load level of your server on average.

We have disabled the Mchat, Cgiecho, Cgiemail, Guestbook, Counter and Formmails from CPanel's system wide cgi-sys directory. The are the most commonly exploited scripts since they are in the same location on every CPanel server in the world.
!!IMPORTANT!!: If any of your users are using any of those programs, they will no longer work. If you want us to re-enable them, just let us know.

Unused programs have been disabled from the OS of your server. This reduces the chance of being compromised through software exploits on old or deprecated programs.

MultiTail has been installed and gives you the ability to tail (view realtime activity) multiple log files simultaneously.

PHPSysInfo has been installed. This is a GUI (graphical user interface) to your server's vital statistics. You can view it by going to
Replace with your own server's IP Address. You will have to enter your root login information to gain access as it is protected under your root WHM login.

Telnet has been disabled to prevent insecure transmissions of data and passwords, SSH must be used instead of Telnet, and functions the same way.

SSH has been hardened by restricting the SSH Protocol to SSH 2. SSH will function the same way, just more secure.

Fileman (Filemanager developed by has been installed into WHM with root level permissions. This allows system root files to be edited in an emergency situation when SSH is not accessible. You can access Fileman by going to
Replace with your own server's IP Address. You will have to enter your root login information to gain access as it is protected under your root WHM login.
!!IMPORTANT!! This simulates SSH access, treat it as such, do not use it unless you are familiar with SSH. Moreover, do not execute any commands you are not fluent with. As with SSH, damage can be done if Fileman is not used properly. If you are unfamiliar with SSH, do NOT use this program. It should be left in case of such an emergency.

Again, this file can only be accessed through WHM while being logged in as root.

Shell Fork Bomb/Memory Hog Protection has been enabled. Fork Bomb/Memory Hog protection will prevent users logged into a shell (ssh/telnet) from using up all the resources on the server and causing a crash.

Background Process Killer has been enabled to kill any of the following which are commonly recognized bad processes: BitchX, bnc, eggdrop, generic-sniffers, guardservices, ircd, psyBNC, ptlink and related services.

A warning message has been created for the SSH login welcome screen. Any user that logs into your server via SSH, will see a message stating SSH is for authorized users only, and any unauthorized access will be reported to the law enforcement authorities.

Your FTP server software has been upgraded and secured.

We've ran and simulated a basic password scan hack attempt, the results have been emailed to 'root' and a copy of the results have been saved on your server at /root/security/passwordscanner.output

Can we guarantee your system will be hacker proof?
No, nobody can! It is 100% impossible to make a server hacker proof, that's a fact. This is even more impossible when vulnerable freeware scripts are so commonly used (forums, bb's, guestbooks, formmails). Nevertheless, even multibillion dollar company's such as banks, government computers, credit card companies, have had server's compromised. We consider our security hardening procedures to make your system hacker resistant. The software we install secures the system without adversely effecting or hindering the normal operations of your server.

If you would like any other security software installed, just let us know and we'll be more than glad to do so.

Thank you,
Technical Support

If need be, I can submit a ton more of documents but I think we have clearly shot holes in Josh's slander!
